@makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social true and I think this is a brilliant business decision
giving the base of your product away for free
if you're someone hacking away on your own infra and you need an always-on P2P VPN, you choose Netbird/Tailscale and get familiar with it
since you already have a technical background, it's not unimaginable that you might get hired for a tech position and recommend Tailscale/Netbird as the VPN solution for your company since it works great for you at home
giving the product to interested individuals for free is low-impact, it doesn't cost them much
getting a company to buy your expensive business plan on the other hand is likely far more profitable and justifies using the free personal tier as an ad

if you don't want to use any of these SSO options, you're free to just use email
I also honestly don't think you or me are the target audience of Netbird, their core audience are likely companies, particularly startups
companies tend to have Entra/Google/GitHub/M$ accounts already enrolled for every one of their employees
they're likely hoping that one of their employees might stumble upon Netbird, say "hey, that's exactly what we need", click one of the big shiny slopware SSO buttons and try it out in a few minutes instead of fiddling with emails
I also don't think your grandma is the target audience for "an Open Source Zero Trust Networking platform that allows you to create secure private networks for your organization or home"
also where in their marketing do they say that they're focused on being "soverign"? I couldn't find that

@benroyce@mastodon.social @makeithappen5634@privacysafe.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu I think there's this weird energy when it comes to bikes and cars on fedi
On one hand you have the cyclists who are like "fuck cars, they're bad, they're unsafe and they put me in danger"
and on the other hand you have "passionate drivers" who are like "fuck the cyclists, they're taking up space on my road and putting themselves in my way"
it's polarized, but it doesn't have to be
both sides want the same thing -- a safe environment where people can drive cars AND bikes
in practice I think this means building dedicated cycling routes and stopping trying to shove cyclists onto regular roads alongside multi-tonne high-speed objects

it makes sense, anger and frustration are strong emotions and because they wanted to comment, they created an account?
I'm guessing obviously

@fenglengshun True, intuition is a powerful thing.
I honestly think Anthropic is just trying (and failing) at a PR stunt to look FOSS-friendly. But it’s wild to see this much heat for them when companies like Meta and Google are also sponsors (though not nearly as big).
It feels like we’ve become desensitized to "standard" big tech and AI is the "new dangerous thing" which gets a much more emotional response.

@niccolove it really feels like fedi isn't a very open-minded place
I don't think I've actually seen a serious discussion about any topic that lead anywhere here
expect a lot of "oof" and "you can't be serious" and "time to cancel Nicco" replies on your post 💀
AI = bad, anything AI-related is also bad, no place for discussion, fedi's mind is already made up

that wave shot at the start looked so impossible, like it was made in 3D 🤯

@rrustema020 @notjustbikes I'm sorry but you read something I didn't say
I'm saying the fact that people are used to governments saying what's good and what's not makes people think less for themselves. Think "oh, alcohol is legal, therefore drinking is safer than other drugs".
The fact that people still buy these monstrosities is just crazy but apparently there are enough crazy people to keep business going. But if these things are legal, they can't be bad, right?

@rrustema020 @notjustbikes unfortunately what most people expect as a reaction to this is either banning cars that are "too tall" or "too short"
my reaction is "holy shit, this is nightmare fuel, I wouldn't want to be on either side of this so I'm never buying that type of car" and I think this should be the reaction of everyone who sees this
but we live in a world of "oh, this is legal so it can't be bad"! we outsource thinking for ourselves to governments and these are the consequences

@EugeneMcParland having a government usurp people's money and using it to fuel its agendas is somehow still considered "normal" and "moral"
People only start talking when they happen to disagree with what the government does with that stolen money. Still, no one really seems to question the system itself.

@linuxphoneapps it's still not clear to me how exactly one does that
I know about:
X-Purism-FormFactor=Workstation;Mobile; in the .desktop filetouch input support in appstreamrequired display size in appstream
but it isn't clear to me which ones are actually required for an application to be considered phone-friendly

@webbop@tech.lgbt @emilyyoung@tech.lgbt email is completely based on trust
while email is encrypted in transit, it's otherwise written in plain text so both the sending and receiving servers know the full content
the only way to prevent this is by encrypting the emails yourself, but I only know one person that does that irl
the only real alternative is hosting your own server which is pretty simple these days thanks to e.g. https://stalw.art

@elly We're going at it the wrong way. I say we, because I would have completely agreed with you until pretty recently.
Regulations are not the way. When you regulate, you take away people's freedoms. We need to educate people and spread awareness.
People need to know companies are stealing their data and profiting on it. More importantly, people need to know exactly how bad it is and that it affects them.
