I have always really enjoyed the teaching-learning experience of code reviews. It's a chance for the code author and reviewer to learn from each other, and so helps distribute knowledge across the team. Code review is even more important for open source contributors--it's a chance to communicate the culture of the project, show appreciation for their effort, gauge their skill level, and provide appropriate guidance to help them grow. (Kindness and a little encouragement goes a long way!) 1/2

Frankly the fact that OpenAI and Anthropic are both spreading "IPO coming soon" rumors shows how dire their financial situation must be.

The hyperscalers (goog, msft, meta, nvda) have resorted to all sorts of borderline-fraudulent schemes to keep the billions flowing, but clearly it's not going to be enough.

So OpenAI is now seeking retail investors (that is, "dumb money") to bail them out before the whole house of cards collapses.

ah, the glorious battlecruiser. my 122-key unicomp model m. far too loud for polite company, I won't even bother setting it up if it's a meeting-heavy day.

this means the most fun days at work (or weekend afternoons) tend to involve this sand-and-pebble monster, which has behaviorally conditioned me to like it even more.

Thinking today what I was trying to articulate over the weekend about an AI slop-free search engine might be better solved using search over social bookmarks.

The only bit of magic needed would be tacking on a search engine--storing opengraph data (or full archives) of bookmarked pages, and pulling in that same data from the people/groups you follow.

Seems like a more natural fit for the Fediverse.

I've plotted out the move of my personal digital stuff and websites to EU companies, and have laid the parallel track (https://european-alternatives.eu/ was very helpful!).

Going to sleep on it and debug the plans tomorrow, and then start carefully migrating.

I've been thinking about this for, oh, about a year and a half, but it was the Cloudflare "look ma, no brains" AI layoff announcement that forced my hand.

From the forever alone dept:

I went to check out volumes 1 and 2 of Gauss's Werke from UCLA yesterday and it turns out they never put a barcode on them. I guess nobody noticed in the past couple decades?

(In fairness to the academic community at UCLA, I am the 7th and 5th borrower, respectively, since a 1966 (resp. 1968) rebind. Not _completely_ alone in reading the masters.)

The student workers kindly let me borrow the books on the honor system, marginally restoring my faith in humanity

I want a search engine that aggressively downranks AI-generated content.

Does this exist?

I've been using no-AI Google (the udm=14 trick) for months now. With the AI noise out of the way, it is painfully clear that Google search quality has plummeted.

I often resort to adding "reddit" to my search terms to try to pull back a human-authored thread. Especially when comparison shopping.

If Google's own index/cache is the source of their "new AI search", it's just going to be 2nd-order slop.

working on a python server project feels absolutely luxurious after years dealing with the fragmentation and unreliability of the server-side JS ecosystem.

when you need heavy tools for a python project, you can easily find a few robust, mature, documented, well-maintained options to choose from.

I haven't once had to resort to skimming bug lists or comparing github and npm nicks to verify a python package (1) works (2) is maintained (3) is actually published by the maintainers. it's great!

wow, planning a trip using a paperback rick steves guidebook is so much nicer than trying to search for the same info on the web

Replying to @amy@tech.lgbt
@amy@tech.lgbt hey there 👋 depends on the company, but behavioral interviews and system design are good to study, too. Check out "Beyond Cracking the Coding Interview" - a good revision of CTCI with lots of stuff finally collected in one place, like sliding window problems. Also, interviewing.io has some extra content not in BCTCI (I haven't bothered with their paid mock interviews, but I would if I were actively looking).
