I was supposed to donate blood on Christmas Eve but had been unwell in the week earlier so rescheduled to New Year's Eve.

Similarly, online only conferences can be bad for others who have difficulty (medical, connectivity, or financial) staying online for long periods.
Bringing the conference to less Global North locations is good, but can come with other issues. This is why we rotate, but there will always be problems.
That said, I'm hoping to convince my institution to let me go...

I know that local organisers are investigating it, but this will likely only be keynotes rather than full hybrid. They are already having to provide additional internet facilities for the in-person participants. TEI-C is certainly willing to help with resources, but if you know any willing sponsors I'm sure they'd be happy to know about them.... 😃

Please remember that TEI-C conferences are responsive, we rely on community volunteering to host conferences (and have been encouraging those in Global South for many years). Although the TEI-C contributes funding to the conference it can only provide so much. Hybrid, unless done very well, is worse for everyone. Virtual-only opens up accessibility, but tends to limit the local benefits. Perhaps we should add in virtual-only every 4 years with the other rotations.

Speaking in a personal capacity but also as a previous organiser (TEI2022) where hybrid was also not provided, the costs in doing hybrid properly (staff, equipment, IT) are prohibitive in many places. Or you suffer with institutional systems that are not suitable and everyone has a bad time. We recorded slides+audio where possible. TEI-C has limited resources. I believe TEI2024 is looking to record or potentially stream keynotes, but no infrastructure for full hybrid.

What third-party online tools do people use to make shareable timelines these days? Want to be able to have a timeline with main events but then if students zoom in at a specific point they get more minor events/context. Want to be able to just give them a URL to view, no login. Suggestions?

@JennyMitcham@digipres.club the tension is between developers wanting quick easy solutions (as that is all they are funded for) vs long-term preservation of resources.
And of course only useful certain types of projects. (E.g. not large scale infrastructure ones) But bearing these issues in mind if always a useful thing to do.
