@chrism@chattingdarkly.org I just switched over to using NixOS as my primary dev box yesterday. I'm living in the future now, baybee! Also installed the Nix toolchain on my Mac (to get a compatible version of wezterm), so I've got experimentation to do there.

It is hard to quantify productivity improvements using AI. Case in point: I asked Claude to create a histogram by week of my work done YTD and while the peak was within the last 3 weeks, there was around a 10% bump. But then I asked it to estimate the time required to build a project I built in the last week if done by hand by a go expert and it said 900 hours.

@simon@fedi.simonwillison.net Hey, I had an idea of a benchmark for you: Write a program entirely in python bytecode, don't cheat and write it in python and compile it, write it directly in bytecode. I tried this (with hello world, likely should be more complex) ~6 month ago it it did stunningly badly, but eventually did it after quite a few kicks at the can. I feel like it's a task that there isn't just gigabytes of source code out there, so it has to "think" about it.

@wren6991 Just to clarify: I get where you're going, but that is not, to my understanding (informed by ~3 years of heavy AI use) "agentic AI". What you are talking about is more called "tool use". Tool use is often used as part of agentic workflows, but are not what makes agentic agentic. You can do agentic workflows without tool use.

You ever gone into code thinking "I wrote this, I know what's going on, I know how to make this change" but then later found you had missed some corner case? Like the other day I forgot to update the deb postinst. Coding your "mentoring" into the AGENTS.md but starting with clear context has been working very well for me lately.
