@paul@tapbots.social I mean, for analog audio cables, it might make "some" sense to use thicker cables and stuff, even when you cannot hear the difference due to other limitations. But come on, digital? Is that a joke or are there some people really this dumb?

@jann@infosec.exchange My favorite translation fail was the Windows95 button in the dial-up configuration to connect to the Internet. In English, there was a button "Unsave password" to delete your saved password. In German Win95, they translated that button to "Unsicheres Passwort" (which means 'insecure password'). I'm sure many German speaking people clicked that button.

@jiska They don't exactly say it's related in the article, but yes, it sounds like that. Also, the jamf article doesn't really mention the affected iOS versions, so for a non-technical user, it's not clear. And even tech users don't all know these details. But good point you're making here. They should've gotten a proof reader that is not an LLM.

@nycki@bark.lgbt I didn't know that this started it. But yes, I've seen that he found no gender differences. I think the joke comes from the fact that women are often more into fashion, where you need all these names and some men get fed up by those silly names, so it resonates with many people. But yes, it's just a stereotype and besides the fact that more men are color blind, there should be no color related differences.

@HalvarFlake@mastodon.social That's an odd take. Yes, in the past, software development has accelerated by abstraction and frameworks, making runtime slower, bloated code, etc., but immensely increasing development timelines. Nobody develops big projects in Assembly nowadays. BUT I fail to see where LLMs increase productivity of large projects currently. Main costs are speccing out the requirements and making sure these requirements fit into the existing code. Doubling the amount of coders doesn't half the development times. Or were you thinking about using LLMs for project management instead?

@varx In the US, first restaurant use of microwaves was in the late 60s, early 70s. Remember that it took until 1978 when 10% of households had microwaves. In 1970 it was below 1%.

@colincornaby I understood that this is some kind of satire, as it's talking about future 1955 and about Internet at the same time. And microwaves became a thing only around 1970. Does it stand for LLMs or something? If yes, what are they replacing (or not)?

@kenshirriff So the subtraction is not faster (as expected) and also requires a special parallel adder to be fast, but can probably use the same circuit as the ×2+1 adder. It's just that from your toots it sounded like the ×3 is the only special case that requires a special fast adder, but looks like the ×6 etc. also needs this.

@kenshirriff Adding two integers is slow, but multiply by 8 and subtracting 2x is fast? Why is subtraction faster than addition?
