It's not likely - but I'm hoping Apple resumes live keynotes and press events. Ternus is a much better presenter than Cook. While no one is as good a showman as Jobs was, Ternus at least seems to have the best presence out of all the big tech CEOs. He was on the interview circuit last week and I thought did quite well.

As a Mac Pro 2019 owner happy I can now tell people that my computer was engineered personally by the CEO of Apple. You can discontinue it but you can't keep us from being insufferable about the Mac Pro!

I can tell Duolingo is starting to do LLM based translations because things are really going downhill.

In French a "Robot de cuisine" refers to a kitchen appliance - and a lot of kitchen appliances have robot in the name. But the Duolingo lessons are starting to get confused and just assume that the French meaning is about actual robots. So now I'm having to translate English sentences about robots cooking in the kitchen - when the French meaning is about a food processor.

Beyond upgrades - I think what I’ll miss most about the Mac Pro is having a Mac that’s meant to go on the floor. For almost 30 years I’ve had a Mac tower under my desk, out of the way.

The Mac Studio is so awkward. It’s smaller than a tower, but takes up enough desk space to be a little uncomfortable. And it’s just tall enough to be noticeable and it be awkward to tuck under a monitor.

Not excited about a desk map. But maybe not annoyed enough to get an under the desk mount.

That feeling when all anyone ever reads on your blog is August 2025 your post comparing programming with an LLM to cooking food in a microwave. Doesn’t matter what I post - it stays in the top spot. Anything deep or technical I posted? Nope. It’s all about microwaves.

It looks like maybe people are ready to move on this month.

(It was a hastily written post but I still stand by it.)

I think the other thing I can't get over with DLSS5 is the industry figures going "this is how we imagined our games would look!"

The demo is running on a machine with two 5090s and your game was designed for 5 year old console hardware. I'm pretty sure if you were able to render normally across two 5090s you could get your game looking a lot better.

Why are we even pretending this is an accessible option. It sounds like Nvidia is *hoping* to get the entire stack running on a single 5090.

I feel like a lot of this is just efficiency theater. “Our users expect so much of us that we must deliver new features from the bus on the way into the office! Look how responsive we are! We are adding things every five minutes! We’re moving so fast we don’t have time to look at the code!” Calm down you’re a music streamer.

I don’t think the “we’re doing vibecoding” part of Spotify’s earnings call is as weird as the “our engineers are merging features without looking at them because they’re doing this during their commutes.”

You’re Spotify. What are you doing that’s so important your engineers can’t wait five minutes to get into the office to check the code.

It’s just such a weird brag.

@joe @jonmsterling @dotstdy I've been pondering - but one issue is that you're usually writing an app that does *something.* If you want to vibe code a Chinese vocabulary tutor - the model needs to know Chinese vocabulary and teaching/lesson techniques.

If you toss vibe coding and go back to handholding like you suggest maybe possible. But that's a lot more handholding and it becomes much more necessary to get your hands dirty with code.

They also have very good PR teams who encourage things like "what about closed loop data centers" that sound very good so no one asks "uh are your data centers actually closed loop?" They're very organized.

I don’t usually get involved in the AI ethics debate. I think it’s a weaker argument because I find people are very… flexible about their beliefs. But there have been a lot of bad “actually this is ethical” takes.
- These companies support ICE and the current administration
- They are driving the threats against Greenland to seize minerals to build more GPUs
- They’re legally threatening critics
- While data centers _can_ be closed loop they often aren’t
- They’re driving up electric rates
- Etc

@provuejim Any PC desktop is going to take user installable RAM, still a lot of PC laptops.

One danger is that Crucial leaving the market will allow other vendors to mark up even more. And those vendors don't just do direct to consumer. A lot of prebuilt machines also might use Crucial memory so it will drive up rarity and prices of off the shelf PCs.

@octothorpe@mastodon.online They've spent so much time working on modern native UI frameworks that their usage of React Native for critical system components is extremely confusing to me. It would be like if after all the effort that Apple put into SwiftUI they rewrote Spotlight as a web app.

@mrudokas People think the bar is being lowered, but really it's being raised like every other time there is a new technology that helps developers.

@mrudokas Again if AGI appears in the next few years thats probably the end of capitalism and all these predictions mean nothing. But it's hard to tell when that happens and it doesn't seem like we're directly on that course.

@mrudokas Regardless of if we're in a bubble (I think we are) and if it pops, I think software will have its own issues for a while. Too much of the C suite has committed to a certain course - and they can't easily undo that without having to explain that to their investors. So that could extend well beyond the bubble.

But I also think those companies will make themselves commodities that will be easy to compete against and they might die off.

@mrudokas I think some companies will definitely destroy their codebases. I think we'll even see overhiring return because if they've deskilled their teams they'll need even more developers to try to make sense of their code.

In other spaces I don't know - but I think anything AI becomes a commodity. Like - why would I buy AI art when I can just generate the same thing? There's no AI art business. But if I want something more unique the human art business might endure.

Everything is a cycle.

@mrudokas As far as the future? I don't think LLMs have what it takes to get us to AGI. AGI will probably happen someday. But AGI will likely be a new thing, not a "microwave."

@mrudokas One reason I picked microwaves in particular is because there was a "everything will be microwaved" craze. That actually happened. But once people got over the novelty of microwaves they realized the output could be poor and went back to restaurants or regular cooking.

Within restaurants the same thing is true. Most restaurants have at least one microwave. Some restaurants are highly microwave dependent and are usually not good.

Update 8/8/2025 – I wrote this the day before a certain post by a popular developer services company. I’ve seen some comments this is a rebuttal – it wasn’t meant to be! But…
