That's hardcoded into the software. So it exists on all servers. Also, you can scroll back and see only up to 400 toots in your timeline. Again, that's not that high. And migrating isn't that easy. When you migrate, you're leaving all your contents behind. lastly, it's not about criticizing mastodon. It's about the fact that rate limit very much exists here

@YourGodSatan@evil.social @flup@mastodon.scot Every online service has rate limit. Which is the number of requests that can be sent from the user. Like loading posts, liking, commenting, posting. This is part of the software and its disingenuous to claim that. Of course what has happened on twitter is that this limit is drastically increased, which has caused issue. While in normal condition, it won't be noticed by normal users. Also iirc, you can only scroll back up to 400 toots in timeline on Mastodon.

@flup@mastodon.scot Except, Mastodon does have a rate limit. And at times it also had bugs that it reach rate limit way too sooner than it should not long ago.
