Day 9 of Drawing a Font Every Couple Days. Today: Belle Epoque French Roundhand Revival.
This is another typeface with unclear origins, but the earliest sample I know of is from a specimen by Deberny & Cie from around 1908, likely designed in-house. I first caught wind of it in Louise Fili’s “Scripts” compendium, and was in awe with the absolute elegance. Those hairlines, those enormous caps, woof!
Huge thanks to the walking talking catalogue Florian Hardwig (@fhardwig@mastodon.social) for helping me find more info and specimens.

Day 8 of Drawing a Font Every Couple Days. Today: reverse contrast Art Nouveau, based on a hand-painted sign I passed by chance in Amsterdam Oud Zuid.

Day 7 of Drawing a Font Every Couple Days. It’s been a week since the last font, and I spent 3 days on this one. Forgive me.
Today: 1900’s Arts & Crafts/Jugendstil/Whateverist take on Fraktur, with organic curves, Lombardic capitals and lots of ornament, that does well in a Brothers Grimm setting.

Day 6 of Drawing a Font Every Couple Days: Art Nouveau Script revival. Based on an early 20th century French font that I can’t find much information about.

Anybody know anything about this script font that makes a one-page appearance in Deberny & Peignot's 1930 Spécimen Général v1?

Day 5 of Drawing a Font Every Day. Took a few days off, but am back with this little connecting script font. Not based on anything specific, just a marker script that looks like something you’d see on a 1930’s movie poster or aperitif ad. Handwriting-ish but also crisp, bordering geometric.
I managed to make this work with very few contextual alternates. It’s pretty rough around the edges, but I guess that’s the nature of fonts drawn in the span of a day!

Day 4 of drawing a font every other day: monospaced blackletter.
