@ohir@social.vivaldi.net @TritTriton@shelter.moe @user365@toot.community @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net Other people have already compiled Chromium and Tor Browser for you: https://github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium#downloads https://www.torproject.org/download/ If grandma is able to install Vivaldi she's able to install these... and I just realized your instance is @vivaldi.net, idk why I didn't read the instance name before wasting my time trying to talk you out of advertising a product you're clearly invested in selling to others.

@ohir@social.vivaldi.net @TritTriton@shelter.moe @user365@toot.community @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net But if grandma refuses to or can’t let go of the modern web she could try the Tor Browser, ungoogled-chromium, etc, basically anything that isn’t just Chrome/Firefox bundled with even more spyware on top, which is the case with Vivaldi.

@ohir@social.vivaldi.net @TritTriton@shelter.moe @user365@toot.community @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net Grandma is not interested in “fighting big tech” and “resisting capitalism” so she’ll be just fine on Chrome, there’s no need to install a false revolutionary messiah on her computer that’s just going to harvest her data all the same and sell it to the same buyers. If grandma really wanted to get away from all of this she ought to minimize her exposure to the modern web instead, it’s the only real solution.

@Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net @Thales_Curiosities@mastodon.social >outdated

The article I sent was last updated in 2022 and shows malicious user data collection, the post you sent is from 2019, there are some possible conclusions here:

  1. Vivaldi has time travel technology?

  2. In 2019 Vivaldi had no spyware but it was added somewhere between then and 2022?

  3. That article is full of lies and the spyware was always present?

Replace whoever was responsible for this dumb reply with an LLM and you’ll get better results.

@Thales_Curiosities@mastodon.social @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net I use Safari on macOS with iCloud sync + all the data collection, I just don't advertise my Safari use as a "rebellion" against "big tech and capitalism". If you're looking to reduce your exposure to data collection you should reduce your use of the modern web in general, failing that you are stuck between false saviors (Vivaldi, Brave, Firefox, etc) and self-torture (Tor Browser, no javascript, obscure outdated/obscure browsers that don't render sites properly, etc)

@ohir@social.vivaldi.net @TritTriton@shelter.moe @user365@toot.community @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net “I prefer European™️ proprietary spyware (Vivaldi), it keeps me safe from the evil American open source project (Chromium)” Braindead. There was no argument in that post beyond “we want to commercialize our brand and sell your data”, accepting spyware just because the people harvesting your data live in Europe, especially when non-spying alternatives exist, is just sad, but also hilarious.

@TritTriton@shelter.moe @user365@toot.community @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net > Even though most of the security-relevant code for Vivaldi browser is in Chromium, there is also some security-relevant code in the UI. If you think that specific security-relevant parts of the UI should be open-sourced to make Vivaldi more trustworthy, let us know, and we’ll consider putting it out as part of our code bundles, so you can check it for yourselves. That's an unfalsifiable claim without source code access, how can you "check it for yourself" w/o it?

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social I don’t understand putting your trust in black box proprietary encryption software when TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt exist and are older than BitLocker by 3 years, stupid doesn’t even begin to describe it.

@signalapp Sure, just change the service to allow users to register without handing you their phone numbers or any other form of real life identifying information and I'll donate $100 on the same day the update drops! I'm not registering, sending a single cent or recommending anyone use this over https://matrix.org until then 👍 This is not a new complaint (https://community.signalusers.org/t/registration-without-a-phone-number/2222) and the fact that we are almost in the big '26 with no plans in sight to change this should raise some eyebrows
