It’s kinda the same thing. The curve of probability over time is shifting closer to the present (faster than we approach it through the normal passage of time).

Every few years there’s a headline like this. … Not because people are dredging up old news, but because the collapse estimate keeps getting revised to be sooner.

It’s also a joke about how very subtle actions count as signaling a bid. Never been to a horse auction so I don’t know how true that is IRL, but it’s a trope in media.

Never trust a tech worker, they decided long ago to sell out the species and the planet.

The ironic thing is, the tech industry started out from hippie counterculture. Fucking tech-bro business major types ruined it.

Sampling bias from the fact that you’re reading posts written in English, not Mandarin. (By the way, I’m actually not as concerned with Chinese companies collecting my data as I am from American companies doing it, precisely because China doesn’t have jurisdiction over me, while the US does. Similarly, I would expect Chinese people to be more afraid of Chinese data collection than they are of US data collection.)

This is why shaming the idiots who say things like "what's the big deal, it's just a field in a text file" is so important. They need to be made to understand that solidarity is required to resist the tyrants.

Yeah, sorry, I wasn't as precise as I could've been. I was really just trying to convey the motivations (i.e. that it was due to being mistaken for foreign as opposed to being targeted for using a VPN), not go into the details of exactly which aspect of the VPN (the entrance IP geolocation, the exit IP geolocation, or the company HQ location) would actually trigger the "foreign-ness."

Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, both affected regions have experienced physical impacts to infrastructure as a result of drone strikes. In the UAE, two of our facilities were directly struck, while in Bahrain, a drone strike in close proximity to one of our facilities caused physical impacts to our infrastructure. These strikes have caused structural damage, disrupted power delivery to our infrastructure, and in some cases required fire suppression activities that resulted in additional water damage.

Those are the ones that would cause them to surveil you. The issue isn't necessarily "the government will target you for using a VPN;" the issue is "if your IP makes you look like you're outside the US because that's where your traffic exits the VPN, the laws against domestic spying won't protect you properly because you'll look like a foreigner." Frankly, the headline is heavily spinning it to be anti-VPN fearmongering.

This is irrational past a certain point however, there is no reason non-electric cars won’t be programmed to do shitty things to? If you’re comparing new electric cars to new internal-combustion cars, sure. But old internal-combustion cars are a non-enshittified option too, and unfortunately, there’s no such thing as an old [mass-market] electric car. If I could have, say, a GM EV1, or a 2001 Ford Ranger EV, or a 2001 Rav4 EV, or something like that (but with the NiMH batteries swapped for modern lithium ones), I’d totally get an EV. But those cars were all low-volume production when they were new, and are surely even harder to get a hold of now.

If by "complicates... basic PC ownership" they mean "infringes on your property rights as a computer owner," then they're finally catching on to what I've been saying for damn near a decade. You should not accept having an abusive relationship with your operating system, and that's what Windows has been since at least 8 (when they started infecting it with "telemetry"), if not earlier. Have some goddamn self-respect, people! Kick Microsoft to the curb!

Also, if you’re directing the average joe to use the terminal, it’s too hard. Seriously. Okay, I admit, that’s one flaw (out of many) with Kubuntu: there are two different entries for Steam in DIscover (the graphical software installer interface) because of Canonical’s obsession with Snaps, so that’s why I wrote an unambiguous console command instead. To be clear, I don’t actually like Snaps or some of Canonical’s other business practices. I don’t want to be recommending Kubuntu. But I can’t deny that it’s the easiest distro I’ve ever used.

Except none of that gaming performance value matters if you can’t get it working in the first place! People, especially ones new to Linux, shouldn’t have to know or care about the tools you mentioned. Hell, I had to DDG them to find out WTF you were talking about, and I’ve been gaming exclusively on Linux for damn near a decade! They don’t matter, and they’re especially not worth risking fucking up your entire experience for!

if it really was the year of the Linux, it shouldn’t be 10 hiccups from install to game. It isn’t 10 hiccups from install to game, if you just install something normal like Ubuntu or Fedora! The problem here is that the noobs are getting seduced by useless meme distros instead.

Trying to go for a “Linux gaming distro” is the wrong thing to do in the first place, IMO. Even if they’re gamers, they’re switching the computers they use for everything. What they needed was a general-purpose distro and then to install Steam or whatever on top of that. The notion of a “gaming distro” should be considered harmful for everything other than maybe running it on one of those Steam Deck knock-offs.
