@MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk please, let's stop blaming this on the people who take a flight to holiday. a handfull of companies and policy makers could easily do the right thing but since they don't the millions of us should somehow go against all common sense and fight economic pressures to compensate for it? if a return flight from boston to hawaii (11h on plane one way) costs 300usd and airbnb there is 100usd per night while a hotel at cape cod (3h drive from boston) is 400usd per night of course people will go to hawaii!

@mathew@universeodon.com @rolle@mementomori.social let me clarify... i do not care so much about followers as about reaching and connecting with the right people. building a big follower base is a big task and not everyone can do it. finding and joining a community of like-minded people (think lemmy c/community or even just a small group of friends that follow each other on mastodon or share the same server) is comparatively easier and interacting within this group is much more manageable for most people. creating such small groups and being able to find them is, however, only possible if a big group of people share the same platform for doing that. that is why federation is important. having 100 small isolated mastodon servers with one weird person on each of them does not help. having 100 weird people on 100 federated servers following the same hashtag or being included within the same community/group of any kind does.

@rolle@mementomori.social well, that's much easier to say when you have thousands of followers... most of us here (or anywhere) get exactly zero engagement for most of our posts. and i get it, i dropped fb, reddit and other mainstream social media because i think the algorithm has too much power over me, but i also get why most people stay - imho they simply desire validation and connection. those are either hard earned or easily faked...

@rolle@mementomori.social i like your sentiment but i carefully disagree about the big audience. small community is great and ultimately we all can interact only with quite limited number of people. but it is only good if it is a community that you like. if you are part of the "normal" majority you can probably make almost any community work for you. if you are a bit "strange" minority you might need to comb through comparatively large number of people before you find those that you can bond with. and it's this process (finding your small community) where big audience is important. people and communities constantly change and reform... when you discover something new about yourself you will have it much easier if you can yell it out and hear others like you shout back.

@lumi@snug.moe @jdelacueva@mastodon.social @IvanSanchez@mastodon.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @fruitchypear@owo.cafe @greatlaketrout@noc.social ownership is not the important thing here although in my example it allows them to exercise control without further issues. the point i was trying to make was better management. company takes away the control to make it easier for them to manage the devices in a way that is beneficial for the organisation. government does the same for the community when it does regulation. there is a reason why you cannot take just any car to a public road to pick one example from many. and you could also argue, in the same way as you do for computers/phones, that it's their car and every driver should just be educated and know that their car needs things like seat belts or rear mirrors.

@lumi@snug.moe @jdelacueva@mastodon.social @IvanSanchez@mastodon.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @fruitchypear@owo.cafe @greatlaketrout@noc.social sure, but your freedoms end where freedoms of someone else start. author of the app also has freedom to decide where they allow their app to be run (and, perhaps, in the case of apps that are managed by governments for the purpose of running our community that right even becomes duty). they will not allow you to do whatever you want with it for the exact same reason some companies won't give their employees admin access to their work computer - it's just not worth the risk for the organization... that is incredibly annoying if you are responsible and literate (say, a software developer) but they simply cannot guarantee that some random charlie from accounting will not compromise the entire enterprise network otherwise.

@lumi@snug.moe @jdelacueva@mastodon.social @IvanSanchez@mastodon.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @fruitchypear@owo.cafe @greatlaketrout@noc.social i agree this is bad. government infrastructure should not be locked into a private vendor. but i do not agree with the stance in principle... just because the system can run an app it doesn't mean it should. we learned that lesson when logging into secure services on shady internet cafe computers... something like your banking app or, indeed, ID wallet might want to set some conditions on where you can use it to prevent possible abuse. that being said, the condition absolutely shouldn't be "we can only run in a place where a foreign private entity can track you".

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange on one hand this makes lot of sense, on the other this makes the app switch worse. many apps that work on windows work there slightly differently and often are actually harder to use... which can be a deal breaker for people who are not sure about the entire thing (those who really want to make the switch will find the way one way or the other). as an example try to use something like darktable on windows.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social imho the biggest design problem with activitypub (not just mastodon) is that it effectively leaves moderation to server admins. people who are good at running infrastructure are not necessarily good at running communities... i've seen some people i followed disappear from my feed because their server suddenly defederated my server on the basis that my server federates with some servers that the the other one didn't like. decentralzation is good but it effectively leaves it up to you, mere user, to research and constantly keep tabs on whoever runs your infrastructure and in what standing they are with other people who run infrastructure... which i find kind of crazy. i would very much prefer something like the old BBS where communities are a separate thing and different servers just subscribe to a subset of them.

@mariafarrell i still do host my own email server but i don't use it as my primary email any more exactly because of shit like this... i can somehow digest the 50 scam emails per day that slip through my primitive spam filter but i NEED my tax advisor to recieve my documents on time and that just doesn't happen when gmail or outlook suddenly decide my 17th email in a chain is a spam.

@jeffowski oh yes, that's classic. my family shipped me a surprise birthday gift from europe to the US. it was left in front of my door by fedex (no signature needed). since this happened around the time when trump was doing his thing with tarrifs and shipping regulations two months later fedex sent me a bill for customs plus their "processing fee". i tried to ask some lawyers if that is even legal (my family had no idea about which career would be used, what their internal regulations would be or what tariffs would apply by the time the gift was shipped and i had no way of refusing or even knowing about the delivery). the lawyers not only told me that fedex did nothing wrong but advised me to pay (to avoid further problems) and sue my family for the amount i paid in customs if i really wanted that back - for sending me a birthday gift that is...

@FoxesInLove oh i love those! our siemens washing machine had a safety booklet that made a small note to remove transport locks from the drum dampeners before first use - on page 8 out of 17 right between the warning to not eat washing detergents and the warning that electricity can hurt you (while omitting that info in instruction and setup manual)... they just like to make sure you read everything i guess (and punish you by having the washing machine demolish your bathroom of you don't).

@taylorlorenz imho any decent intro should include some ways to find people to follow that post about variety of topics. most people coming from currently popular platforms would be used to algorithmically generated content/timeline and when they just create account and log in they simply won't see anything of interest to them (local/global feeds are full of politics and negative tech news)... without following at least 100 active people that post things that you care about this place can be pretty depressing.

some time ago i (half) joked that the only job #llm can replace outright is the CEO. today i attended an earnings call where a synthetised voice of our CEO read multi-page long table of numbers from an official financial document, according to a script prepared by claude, over a single slide titled "company earnings 2025" - to a room full of employees who commuted to the office to watch it in person. there was no management present or even shown on the screen. it was the most disturbed dystopian fucking thing i've experienced in my career of working for soul-crushing corporations.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange i hope i understand you correctly but from my practical experience who and how writes the specification is always problem in development - regardless of who or what writes the code. this is exactly why vibecoding kinda works (or looks like it works) for people who are not so good at it (especially people who wouldn't write the code anyway). they have to explain the thing to someone, ideally in writing, and then let that someone fill all the details they didn't think about and let them write the code. that happens one way or the other. and with people it takes ages and they rarely end up with something they actually wanted and/or needed... so when it at least doesn't take ages and the chatbot is not blaming them for being too vague to specify the problem it looks great to them. of course, it's a trap, but they don't know that yet.

@skeletor nooo... that's precisely the problem! you *would* blow the mind of your past you IF you could show them how far you have come... but you can't. and your current you probably has much higher standards and expectations. your current you and their (possibly unrealistic) expectations are all you have to work with to make yourself happy about you.
