Updated my personal server from @debian@framapiaf.org 12 #bookworm to 13 #trixie, and as I expected, that went completely smoothly and without any complication. Debian always delivers.

@oscherler@tooting.ch @masek@infosec.exchange Yeah, it does seem to fit the bill, but the UI isn't simple and tailored to this use case. I'll give MS a little while to figure out the skype account transfer they claim is still pending, to see if that reduces the barrier to adoption.

@blub@norden.social @Jami@mstdn.io First time I hear about it. On paper, it's perfect, and the UI great too. 100% exactly what I want. In practice:

  • I'm having some connectivity issues (NAT traversal related?)
  • The accuracy of the subtitles (at least for French) is not sufficient to be usable.
  • I'm getting the subtitles to work on the desktop client, but not on android. I'll keep an eye on this, because if the reliability gets better, this is pure gold.

@AngelaScholder@mastodon.energy and yes, the live caption is done by skype. Her android tablet theoretically also has system wide captions, but those never worked on her device (and cannot be depended on on other devices anyway)

@dey@mastodon.social @andrewt@mathstodon.xyz I agree that Meet's UI is simple, and that it does subtitles, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't let you dial someone else, does it? You can create a meeting, and send invitation to people via mail, calendar, etc, but you can make their device ring, can you?

@Styx@piaille.fr I know and like Jitsi, but I think it's lacking:

  • subtitles
  • the ability to call someone and have their device ring (rather than create a meeting and send invitations by email, calendar, etc)

@oleschri@chaos.social Except for the synchronization of skype contacts, which seems to be a gradual roll out, the rest appears to be there. As far as I can tell, the necessary features are there, but with a UI/UX that is more complicated for the case I'm interested in. For instance, subtitles have to be turned on for each call, rather than once and for all. Finding contacts also seems harder. I have not yet figured out if the complexity barrier is surmountable for the people I'd be asking to switch.

@sequundi@social.tchncs.de Skype not only could do subtitles, you could permanently auto-activate them, and not have to do tech support at the start of every call to try and get them turned on. It was great for someone with limited hearing and limited technical skills

@InsertUser@en.osm.town @sequundi@social.tchncs.de I think MS Teams might do it all, but the UX is so convoluted… As a team collaboration software, it might be alright, but to just video+subtitles call someone, there's so many hoops to go through… I hope I'll find something better, but this might be a fallback. Seems challenging to get non-technical elderly people to install and connect with each other though.

Skype is shutting down in May. I've been using it to speak with my grandmother, and I am looking for an alternative, with the following features:
* can do live subtitles (in French)
* works without a phone number/sim card
* can call your contacts and be dialed (i.e. not only invite by email/calendar/url…)
* simple UI/UX (with big buttons) is far more important than feature rich.

I know various things that do some of the above, but I'm not sure what (other than Skype) does all of it.

Any help?

Just figured this out (thanks @fantasai@w3c.social for the hint): If you're a heavy user of mailing lists (like w3c's) and of Thunderbird, go into the Config Editor, and set "mailnews.headers.extraExpandedHeaders" to "Archived-At".

Now each message that is archived somewhere will let you know where, so that you can quote that and point others to it.
