I have been creating interactive artworks and environments for stage productions and installations since 1999.

In most cases I try to capture an inner reality through algorithms that I program by hand. The computer then brings them to life for the audience to dive in.

@ancientjames@mastodon.social Ahh. That would explain it then... 😄 Thank you for the clarification and best of luck for the implementation of the upcoming cylindrical camera model.

@ancientjames@mastodon.social Thank you for your patience regarding my questions… And sorry for mixing both scanline domains in my argument. My question is: if there are 80 vertical drum holes at 48 different horizontal positions, that would allow for a theoretical overall vertical resolution of 80x48=3840 scanlines at different heights per rotation, or am I mistaken again? Perhaps it‘s the clearly visible scanlines in the initial video that confuse me. Are they perhaps due to the camera sensor readout speed?

@ancientjames@mastodon.social Perhaps I have a misunderstanding about the total number of holes in use and the thing is rotating faster than I think it is? Jittering should allow to get rid of fixed scanlines or a fixed pixel raster in the resulting image, with every projector using its own set of coordinates. Only looking at the y direction, it should reduce aliasing by modifying the view on the panel not to follow the panel’s scanlines but you‘d lose some light since you‘d need to space holes further apart.

@ancientjames@mastodon.social Understood. So you mean the panel or time resolution is not high enough so that random displacements wouldn‘t change much?

@ancientjames@mastodon.social @commanderred@chaos.social I see. Just thought by randomly displacing the pinhole origins slightly, you would sacrifice some view angle (or would need to reduce the resolution a bit) and introduce more noise to the overall picture but at the same time might reduce some of the aliasing artifacts arising from the ordered hole placement. No idea though if the raspi could calculate the displaced offsets fast enough in its shader though hashes or a big enough table.

@ancientjames@mastodon.social @commanderred@chaos.social Thank you for the thorough explanation. Fascinating. Did you arrange the pinholes in an ordered fashion or might a kind of randomized pattern help with the aliasing?

@vitSkalicky@fosstodon.org Thank you very much! It‘s not completely sure but the work might be exhibited in Kutná Hora (one hour from Prague) from October 2026 onward.

I'm also releasing these two pictures of a real-time storm scene simulation that I started to work on seven years ago... This simulation shall form the basis of a new 360° art installation about rising sea levels.

I'm experimenting with the simulation of underwater caustics again. The nature of this light phenomenon has fascinated me for more than thirty years now.

@bleuje@mathstodon.xyz Very inspiring. And the colors are great! Pheromone-like trails may be the answer to a question I have been asking myself since my very first interactive work from 1999. That work was based on behavioral rules for particles too but they did not interact with each other then. Thank you very much for your post!
