@msbernst Thanks for sharing this. I felt the same tension when I first taught HCI. It caused me to pivot my course to a mini-design-sprint structure that anchors each sprint on a different set of theories, but the tension is still there. It's really nice to see the approaches from other folk trying to navigate the same space.

I have mixed feelings about the traffic I still get on this 2018 post about using Slack in my classes (https://medium.com/p/888c7e742d04).

Today, I tend to prioritize communication consistency (what do students *already* use here?) vs. a bespoke configuration of tools for my courses.

This article is beautifully designed, but not letting people zoom into their local context is a missed opportunity.

In 2019 interviews, we talked people who devalued overview charts like this because it was harder to find their home (what they care about!)

You know the first time when you put on glasses and realize that trees actually have individual leaves that you can distinguish?

It does not go unnoticed that faculty who invest their labor in some of the most critical societal problems can sometimes lag behind their peers in promotion - that work can be hard, slow, and invisible to scholarly metrics.

@cfiesler Mastodon feels closer to my Twitter feed from 6 years ago before I made a more deliberate efforts to broaden the perspectives in my feed. It's more cozy and comfortable in some ways, but I'm not sure that's a good thing.

I'm finding some of the wide-sweeping takes surrounding "people should stay on Twitter" or "people should never use Twitter" very tricky to navigate... partially because there is enormous variance in personal benefit (which I'm not convinced is transferable) and personal risk (we know that it's an very uneven landscape of safety)

I expect to be on Twitter less, but it also "costs" me less than many people to make that decision

@gxwalsh CI Fellows was different in that they were tied to the individual. I didn't think I could get anyone with an R1-structured position (I'm not going to out-research a research university), so I structured the position closer to some Faculty Fellow programs I've seen at PUIs (teach 1 course + teaching support). It was designed so that you'd come out with an experience that was advantageous on the job market for SLACs/PUIs

@gxwalsh It's not active this year, but I found that the NSF CI Fellow program supportive of a post doc here (we had a successful application, the student just chose another gig). Maybe a good sign?
