@sinituulia@eldritch.cafe Fun story: In like 1995 I was on a telnet-based chat "bbs" custom-coded by a college student on another continent. It was mainly irc-like, but just for fun he made a "mud" mode, where users could create a room and write a descriprion for it, and then invite other users into it. My room was basically almost exactly one of these options.

@naga Yeah I pretty much pause shows to ask my wife "Should I know this person?" any time a character comes in with a new outfit. Also sometimes when they're exactly the same as they were in the previous scene but the vibe is different, or there are too many blond characters. She giggles at me, but we've gotten used to it.

@s0 Sounds Jameson Nathan Jones adjacent, though I don't know if he has anything that's exactly that. His whole thing is that he's an organist who also crosses over into ambient synth. I don't think he specifically does like black-midi on organ or overdubs the instrument dry. He does sample it, and he uses organ techniques in multilayer non-organ music, and he does have some straight compositions for organ and for piano. @b0rk@social.jvns.ca Are you familiar with POSIX? It's an absolute behemoth of a standard, but it's basically the grandmother of unix standardization. It's wide ranging and goes into things like c system calls and threads, but it also has sections on what a shell ought to do and how tar ought to work. Modern distros don't always follow it to the letter, but it's definitely still a common starting point that system devs usually try to stay at least somewhat rooted in. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POSIX

Linux has largely come together around its Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. https://refspecs.linuxfoundation.org/FHS_3.0/fhs/index.html The FHS doesn't really talk about files in your home directory. It cites what I've unfortunately seen as well: several competing ideas of how to do that. I assume the BSDs have a similar one of their own, but I'm less familiar. / @b0rk@social.jvns.ca

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca I absolutely think TAoUP is still great context for why we do some of the things we do in Unix systems. In some parts it's probably out of date with current practice, but I think its Table of Contents and sections make it easy to skip around, and I find a lot of the old patterns still work.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca It's worth noting that Eric S Raymond is a somewhat controversial figure these days, and I rarely hear about him. In the early days of corporate web explosion in the late 90s and early 2000s, a lot of us were less aware of those controversies. He was immensely influential, especially around the time of his 1999 work The Cathedral and the Bazaar.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca I first heard a lot of it formalized in the book The Art of UNIX Programming, edited by Eric S Raymond: http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/taoup/ There's also some good high level discussion of it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_philosophy Neither of those is about the terminal per se, but before the explosive growth of the web, the terminal was the major way of interacting with a unix system. A lot of terminal design issues are pretty intertwined with system design and program design because that's what we used.

@lolennui@mstdn.social In fact preliminary reports underestimate the problem. Upon re-examination of the data, it appears no one alive today has ever successfully hunted a poptart. The skill became extinct when Mr Kellogg died this year without passing on his techniques to his daughter Ms Keller-Nova. Earlier statistics were collected before Mr Joost "Georg" Kellogg's death. He was reported to hunt and slay millions of live pop tarts himself daily for sport. He was an outlier should not have been counted.

I have a few new followers that I know from other parts of the net (and a few I don't)! Hi!

It can be weird starting out with a blank slate. When I got started here, I found people who say interesting things, and then I checked to see if I was able to look at who they follow. Often they follow people who also say interesting things. Also check the people they boost: They clearly say interesting things sometimes too.

Don't forget to check your server's local feed, too!
