Hello world!

I am a regular Linux user. I generally just post replies and boost tech things I feel need more attention.

I may occasionally post/reply to political takes too.

I may also ramble a bit since I'm greatly enjoying my current larger character count.

I used to be on fosstodon with the same username, I didn't have any issues with Fostodon itself, just wanted to try something new.

@Melezioh@mstdn.games This I definitely feel as a man. People wonder I dislike driving cars, why I don't want to go out fishing, and plenty of other "manly" things. As an ace and potentially neurodivergent person, the stereotype of "men are lusty creatures that go after women" is also something that terrifies me. How much distance is correct? What are the non obvious harassment actions? I like to think I balance things good enough and I don't make people uncomfortable, but it is kinda a worry that I might accidentally do something wrong. Though I do feel like I did something right, since the friends I chose myself (gender irrelevant) don't really make me feel on guard on those things.

@hidikem@piaille.fr @eu_os@eupolicy.social That is a pretty strange decision? I still think that something like flathub, which is controlled by what is basically a community, is leagues better than something like the Microsoft Store. But yeah, you're right, it's pretty strange that they don't have even their own mirrors to flathub. It's possible that they may plans do it in the future at some point, when it starts to actually be used more.

@hidikem@piaille.fr @eu_os@eupolicy.social Flathub may be run on US servers. However, you can create alternate flatpak repos hosted wherever you want. Given the nature of flatpaks, they could literally copy over the same build configs from flathub if they wanted to.

@jgg @nachtfunke @jaffathecake This is not the case for Mac, but iphones specifically mandate that all browsers use the safari engine internally. This is not the case in EU due to regulation, but Apple enforces this everywhere else. So even chrome and Firefox use the safari engine on iphones specifically in most places in the world. Though you're right that other browsers are being developed, and Firefox is still a thing that is used. Also I'm not sure how much junk Google can stuff deeply into chromium without facing major backlash. Especially given the existence of things like electron and Microsoft Edge. They could absolutely do it, but would face backlash.

@nachtfunke @jaffathecake Honestly I think Chrome's dominance is severely overrated and that will continue to be the case unless Chrome decides to stop shipping Chromium as open source. Even if Chrome users are the majority, so long as Apple users still use Safari, and iphone (something which cannot use chrome) exists, Google cannot have utter dominance. Especially since I imagine many Chromium forks will not have this. Unless a website is going to only allow Chrome and other things that use this API, no website cannot make this mandatory. As much as I hate needing to account for browser differences when doing webdev, I am actually thankful for it in cases like this.

@karlauerbach Yeah that's really unfortunate. I'm on Linux and generally Firefox isn't pushy for passkeys. Its typically certain individual websites that prompt that for me first, with an option to change that in some small text. I imagine it must be a very annoying experience for an older person not used to passkeys

@karlauerbach I really like passkeys, but hate how they necessarily tie you down to a service. They have the same issue that regular keys do, namely that keys can be lost.

Great. I just saw the below post and I am immediately doubting the sanity of the world. Wtf are these people who want the "public opinion" on a matter doing? What would possess a person to think fabricating polling data through llms of all things is a good idea?

And I definitely agree with the point NYTimes brought up, predictions are different from polling. And even for prediction, you do not use a "low" accuracy llm, you use a domain specific ML model that does prediction for you. I say llms are low accuracy because they are a generalized ml model, meaning they by definition will perform worse than a model finely tuned for a specific task.

Of thats just the technical stuff, the far more obvious issue is the literal fabrication of data that is happening here. You can absolutely run an ML model to predict certain outcomes, including the public sentiment on a specific thing. But that does not actually replace asking the public on their opinion for things. It'd be like checking your weather app to check the current weather, instead of looking out of your window. Except your weather app asks chatgpt for the weather. Do you trust chatgpt to know your current weather outside? Similarly do you trust chatgpt to know what your local community thinks about important issues?

Edit: this is the post I saw

@emilyyoung@tech.lgbt I think the bigger issue is not that we don't have a replacement, simply that no one can get everyone to agree to adopt a single replacement for it. Signal or even RCS is a secure replacement to SMS, but as long as they rely on centralized servers controlled by single companies, they won't be a SMS replacement. I imagine the best way to force a new standard would be something like EU mandating it, forcing companies to all cooperate in adopting it, then it may spread from there.

@angusm@mastodon.social It is honestly kind of surreal watching my professors trying to show us things and then have to deal with operating system and browser ads. especially when those ads are displaying news with decidedly controversial political news. Some of my professors have even expressed frustration with all the things they have to click through each time they log in to the computer (not their personal one, the one setup in classroom). Heck I'm annoyed when I need to login to the uni computers too.
