Seeing the full URL is a "Developer" option in the Gnome Web browser (FKA Epiphany). Otherwise you just get the TLD + domain. 🤷

I think that every GUI tool that in some way edits files should have a way to "reveal this file in file browser".

Perhaps you had an agent write the article and didn't read it yourself, but it contains this phrase:

If I had to simplify even further, I’d explain the big shifts in the web like this: READ -> READ/WRITE -> READ/WRITE/AGENTIC

So it is about simplification.

If you don't want articles to be perceived as discussing history, I would recommend not including years of perceived periods.

As for the "read only web", where do you think websites that users were reading were coming from? Nobody would have been interested in the web if there was no "writing" from the beginning.

Nothing means anything anymore.

This is the menu in Google Mail that allows users to sort the list of messages by either oldest or newest. It uses "disabled" styling for the "active" element, meaning: the list shows the newest messages on top, but the visual suggests the "newest" option is not available in general. I thought this had been figured out in the 1980's…

@320x200 @l03s Thank you so much for these thoughts! (And for lurk's 1337 char limit 😉) What probably hit me the most in your article is that piracy is not illegal anymore, at least for some actors. But clearly piracy needs to remain illegal to fulfill its valuable role to make materials available to communities that otherwise would have no way of accessing them, vetting them for quality/usefulness (not hoarding), and preventing piracy projects to grow into "platforms" that then run on some platform logic. The celebration and activist expansion of legal loopholes that allow some forms of piracy which, for instance, the Swedish Piratbyrån pushed forward, laid the groundwork for where we are now kind of.

@320x200 @l03s Great piece. Many threads to possibly continue with. What I currently find interesting is the new role and modes of organization of piracy. While already in the early 2000's it was known that for instance record labels would seed an album and watch downloads to help deciding what could be the next single, today piracy platforms and what you call the ICT industry seem to work hand in hand. Perhaps going beyond the undiscriminating claim to everything digital by ICT, piracy aggregators like Anna's Archive just by their technical and organizational infrastructure play a huge role to enable extraction, in case of AA even willingly. I wonder what you think about these developments?

Some strange reversals have happened in interface design in the last few years. For instance, many of the buttons displayed on screen don't change the state of an application, but change the state of the user. Typical examples are of such buttons are labeled with "get started", "explore", or "see more", "launch experience", etc... These are basically links to other parts of an application and do not activate or change anything significant in the computer or for other users. They're more about making the user repeat a mantra, or change their attitude before they can access the next piece of information. Always reminds me of Mouchette's "Kill That Cat"
