@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @dougmerritt@mathstodon.xyz @rebane2001@infosec.exchange I'm certainly no expert on this topic, but my understanding is that unicode is just the assignment of codepoints to characters, and that there are all sorts of different unicode encodings such as utf-8 and utf-32. So perhaps in principle the thing you're describing would already be a legal unicode encoding if you just give it a designated name. (Disclaimer: as I said I have no idea what I'm talking about here.)

@counting_is_hard Can we just appreciate how bad an example of teaching this is? Cramming a major result into the last minute of class, ignoring the questions of the lone student who's even *kind* of understanding what she's saying. Just tell the students to read it out of the textbook at that point.

@dperkins What do you mean by "played together nicely"? There are cases where mathematicians tried to have other mathematicians killed by Stalin to take their jobs, of course, but have there been actual cases of mathematicians deliberately advancing arguments they knew (or suspected) to be false?

@brian_greenberg@infosec.exchange "404 Media reported the FBI has pulled deleted Signal message text out of that database using standard forensic tools." How? It seems like that would either involve the sender sending plaintext to the Google servers, or else the receiver decrypting the message and then sending the plaintext to a Google server in order to create a notification on the same phone that just decrypted the message. Is Signal doing one of those things?

@tao@mathstodon.xyz This is how it's always been, right? Hilbert is far better known than any of the people who solved Hilbert's problems. (Except maybe Nash, due to a movie that doesn't even mention that aspect of his life as far as I recall.)

@divbyzero@mathstodon.xyz I was surprised by this statement, and then I read more carefully and saw that this is not f(x) = exp(x) - log(x), but rather f(x, y) = exp(x) - log(y), and at that point it's totally obvious. By setting y = 1 you recover the exponential function. By setting x = 0 you get 1 - log(y), which you can play around with a bit to extract log(y). And then you have exponentials and logs and subtraction and that's obviously enough to give you everything.
