What they failed to mention was that it has a profound destructive impact.

People on here like, "we're getting to the point where it is impossible to argue that AI tools don't work for code" meanwhile my coworker last week used Claude to push a commit that purported to set the version of a dependency. The AI failed at this most basic task.

It's very fun to sit here wondering if I'm depressed or just having a normal reaction to my industry attempting to destroy all of society along with itself on top of fascists being pretty successful at destroying society through politics right now.

Still can't believe that the entire software industry decided to use source control that doesn't properly know what a file is and breaks if you have the audacity to rename one.

@JamesWidman@mastodon.social @nick@donotsta.re @mcc@mastodon.social there's been a bunch of AI code stuff internally at apple, so I wouldn't expect swift (or anything else apple) to remain unaffected for too long.

The permission model on both operating systems is more geared towards preventing the system configuration from getting messed up than preventing anything remotely malicious.

In actual use the C++ that C programmers hate so much is massively simpler (as is Rust and every other higher level language.) Which isn't to say C++ is good, it inherits all of C's flaws and adds some, but many C programmers seem to take pride in using the least capable tool that is at all practical in what feels like a mix of elitism and toxic masculinity.

@delroth@mastodon.delroth.net @lina@vt.social what is it with prominent C developers insisting that there is no reason to learn anything new and that C is the only good way to write software? It isn't just kernel people, this is a huge issue on the userland side of open source too. This gatekeeping is super toxic, and leads to dramatically worse software overall.
