@mayor@banjo.town Back in 1992 I had to deal with a self-thought rock star from Europe. We went into a radio shack store and he flipped out over these. They were like $6 or something. In Europe they were way more expensive. I forgot how many he bought. Lots.

@AlSweigart@mastodon.social My entry in software engineering was as a software tech doing testing on a new assembler for the 8086 written by two software engineers ( and then me too later.) As a newbie I did some research on software testing. It turns out that testing is actually harder as you have to imagine unexpected garbage to throw at it. Not just how it should work but how it can be broken. Software that we assume works vs software we know works to some level.

@RobSF@beige.party In college in the early 70’s, being poor students, my roommate introduced us to a southern CA beer Brew 102. It was like less than 50¢ for a tall can. It belonged in the low end of the bell curve of beer. As the Spanish said of beer when they occupied Holland long ago, it tasted like horse piss.

@gknauss I got a package of two of those batteries, with the message about secret nasty coating and kids. But that was fine. OPENING that package was nearly impossible. I guess they think of kids as highly intelligent and having a convenient hatchet to get to the nasty tasting batteries. I had to use a combination of really sharp knife and scissors, not kid friendly, to finally get it open.

@jbaty@social.lol As a freshman in college I got into an argument with a guy down the hall. He got mainly singles. “I only like that one song, who needs the LP.” I told him that if I REALLY liked some song by a band, etc I would probably like their other songs so I got the LP.

@bruces This type of thinking has been around for years. My BA in Religious Studies came in real handy when I went into software engineering. These fads or fashions seemed to be more religious than science as they seemed to be adopted more from emotions than reason. Working for a computer company in the 70’s run by a cult (est) cemented this observation for me.
