@optilude@techhub.social Nit: the chord symbols you chose are case-sensitive, so in one of your screenshots where you have an uppercasing text field, “DM7B5” is ambiguous (Dm7b5 or DM7b5?). I would use m for minor, and △7 or Maj7 for major 7.

I was once asked what instrument would be a good one for a beginner to expedite learning #MusicTheory. How would you answer that question?

At first glance, a simple answer would be “any”. Music theory is basically applied group theory, and you will be able to exercise some aspect of it on basically musical instrument you can get your hands on.

A more serious answer would be “a polyphonic instrument that can play a chromatic scale”. Like piano, guitar, or ukulele. But not all such instruments map equally well onto the underlying geometry of music, requiring extra layers of indirection to account for their asymmetries.

So my final answer would be “an instrument with an isomorphic keyboard”. Meaning, its playing surface is a regularly tuned 2D grid, such that transposition comes for free. It could be a hex grid like chromatic button accordion or Lumatone. Or a square grid like the violin/mandolin family, bass guitar, Chapman Stick, or Linnstrument.
