Yes, Pennsylvania (annual rainfall 1-1.5m roughly evenly distributed throughout the year) definitely looks like this clearly artificial desert picture

Look, I'm all in favor of switching away from Zoom's new "we'll train our AI on all your meetings" policy and to robust open source alternatives like Jitsi or Big Blue Button, but can we please acknowledge that "you don't have to trust anyone, just read the source" is not actually legitimate advice for projects with a million lines of code plus dependencies, *even for highly experienced developers*?

@gparmer@discuss.systems @krismicinski @regehr@mastodon.social crap I misread that page, I knew they were using only Allwinner D1s for a while, but didn't recognize the numbers and thought they added newer chips; I thought mango pi was all RISC-V

@regehr@mastodon.social @krismicinski this is very true. But this is also the first architecture I can think of where it's easier for hobbyists to get an interesting (small but not microcontroller) board than it is to get a really powerful board, and I wonder what the long-term effects of that will be, could be interesting.

@regehr@mastodon.social @krismicinski "reasonably powerful" is questionable; the board I linked is roughly like a raspberry pi with 1gb of RAM, quad core. Easy to get to play around with or port to (some OpenBSD folks organized a purchase of a pile of these for porting)

@krismicinski @regehr@mastodon.social I mean, it's an official supported platform for Debian and FreeBSD, and you can buy boards akin to RPis pretty easily (https://mangopi.org/mqquad), so, I think it's a thing now

@alilly@solarpunk.moe the one time I tried a console PDF viewer the image quality was, as expected, not great. But the real killer is all these JS-heavy websites, I tried using links and lynx again briefly while trying to fix an X setup problem on an old machine recently, and... almost no sites are navigable that way, they put too many random links everywhere to find anything (makes me sad for folks using screen readers...)

@geomblog@mastodon.social @vijay@discuss.systems projects over a certain size frequently include funds specifically for paying a project manager, and I believe the NSF explicitly requires this for large and expedition grants
