Do you live in a city? If you do, there is something of the sort in most cities; you just need to know the right people or look in the right places. If not, yeah, rough, you could try travelling in to a city though.

My favourite unusual one is sichuan pepper powder on garlic bread. Originated in me rummaging through my spices for stuff to add to my garlic bread and I really liked this. I now add it to garlic bread, pizzas, that sort of thing. Cumin is also a great all purpose spice I put on many things. Cumin+turmeric for curry-flavoured things, but also cumin+salt+pepper+rosemary+garlic granules for anything roasted.

In my own experience, runit is much faster to boot than systemd. Perhaps your experiences differ but I know a lot of people say the same. I agree start-up time is not a big deal. I just mentioned it as it’s the only real performance difference I’ve noticed between OSes.

I don’t think Arch is the distro I would go for if I just wanted speed. I suppose it depends on speed of what—generally systemd Linux will boot noticeably faster than Windows, and non-systemd Linux boots noticeably faster than systemd Linux—but once you’re booted up, I don’t think there’s a significant performance difference. Arch is a Linux distro that uses systemd so it’d be the middle option if you’re wanting fast boots. There are other minimalist distros too, some of which end up in arguably faster systems, but Arch is probably the easiest of the minimalist distros due to being well-documented and supported. But the reason for going for a minimalist distro is usually customisability, not performance. On modern hardware the performance difference is negligible. On very old hardware, you should be looking for another distro made specifically for old hardware (I don’t think Arch even supports 32-bit).

Nobody’s saying it’s mandatory. People don’t want their web browsers to be full of bloated AI slop. Why should there be the AI components of Firefox on my hard drive if I’m never going to use them? Why should my web browser be full of low quality features I’ll never use? It’s enshittification. Not to mention the very quote you’re pasting specifies that it’s opt-out, not opt-in.

Is the silicone used in anal toys different than the one used for vaginal toys? I can answer this question specifically, no idea about egg vibrators in general. If it is actual silicone (and be careful, a lot of cheap Amazon sex toys are not actual silicone), then it’s non-porous and body-safe. In terms of pathogenic safety, any silicone toy can be used both vaginally and anally, and shouldn’t grow bacteria/mould/etc inside it. Toys made specifically for anal will be made of harder silicone to make sure it can penetrate, and you probably know this but should have a flared base for anal. But some toys designed for vaginas also satisfy those qualities.

Oh so you’re saying the latter. Fuh-saad is pretty in line with English pronunciation “rules” (though English doesn’t really have pronunciation rules the same way other languages do—see though, through, cough, bough, etc). Maybe a more “English” way of saying it would be fuh-sayd, but I think the c would be interpreted as a soft c even if it weren’t a loanword. Again, hard to say with English which is notoriously inconsistent though.

New tech isn’t socially neutral. Should we be excited about the possibilities of new missiles and warplanes? If you understand how that new technology can be bad, you can understand how other new technologies can also not be “exciting”. Capitalism produces for the sake of production. We have plenty of useless shit that exists for the ouroboros of profit and marketing rather than to fulfil some natural use case. I think modern LLMs fall into the former, not to mention the energy cost of the current demand. I think LLMs can be cool as toys/for demos/as academic projects/etc but the current prevalence is purely due to marketing and AI companies trying to make something that is quite expensive, profitable.

Having to replace perfectly functional Pixel phones because GOS stopped making updates for them. I don’t blame GOS as they’re a FOSS project and their end of support coincides with Google’s end of support, but it still feels bad replacing perfectly functional hardware. Wish release cycles were much slower so support for existing devices could be focused on, instead of having to spend time porting to every new phone dropped like every year or whatever.

If you limit yourself to not using WSL, sure. WSL 2 runs an actual Linux kernel with the same Linux executables you would find on any other distro. I mean yeah but I don’t want to sit through instructing people how to set up WSL. I’ve only done it once years ago so maybe it’s simpler now—I don’t remember it being hard for me but for the average person I can imagine them getting confused at some point.

That might be a good idea actually. I think Java’s a good balance of demonstrating a variety of programming concepts (I think Python obscures too much that would be good to learn about for a beginner), and telling them to install IntelliJ should be straightforward enough without needing to babysit too much the install/setup process.

Tbh I think one of the main difficulties of Rust is that it works in ways that are quite unusual if you’re used to other programming languages. So maybe that particular difficulty is eliminated for people who’ve never programmed before, but yeah, I imagine it probably is still not an ideal first language.

The problem with Scratch is that you don’t learn very much about computers with it. When I expressed I wanted to learn programming as a kid, I was directed to Scratch, and the whole time I was like “ok this is fun and cool, but when do I get to the real programming. I want to make an ‘actual program’.” You’d learn about how programming works on a very high level but you don’t learn much about how things work “under the hood” which imo is the fun thing about learning to program. The best way I can articulate my goal is like how it feels to watch an edutainment video (think VSauce/Veritasium/Numberphile/etc)—you get a peek at some topic you didn’t know about before and feel you understand how the world works a bit better. It’s not the same thing as training someone up to be an expert, i.e. I’m not trying to turn these people into programmers (though if they’re interested enough they can of course go away and pursue that in their own time).

What’s your target audience ? An what’s the goal ? Good questions. The goal is not to make new programmers but mostly to satisfy curiosity and help people learn about how the world works, specifically how computers work, and to feel more confident around tech. It’s for a non-technical crowd. Mostly just to give them a taster/peek “under the hood”.

What programming language would you recommend for teaching to non-technical people that use a variety of different OSes?

I’m going to be delivering an online intro to programming session to a non-technical crowd who will be “following along at home”. Because it’s online, I can’t provide them with machines that are already set up with an appropriate development environment. I’m familiar with Linuxes and BSDs but honestly have no idea how to get set up with programming stuff on Windows or macOS which presumably most of these people will use, so I need something I can easily instruct them on how to install, and has good cross-platform support so that a basic programming lesson will work on whatever OS the attendees are running. Remember they are non-technical so may need more guidance on installation, so it should be something that is easy to explain. My ideas: C: surely every OS comes with a C compiler pre-installed? I know C code is more platform-specific, but for basic “intro to programming” programs it should be pretty much the same. I think it’s a better language for teaching as you can teach them more about how the computer actually works, and can introduce them to concepts about memory and types that can be obscured by more high-level languages. Python: popular for teaching programming, for the reasons above I’d prefer not to use Python because using e.g. C allows me to teach them more about how the computer works. You could code in Python and never mention types for instance. Rmemeber this is only an intro session so we’re not doing a full course. But Python is probably easy to install on a lot of OSes? And of course easy to program in too. Java: good cross-platform support, allows for teaching about types. Maybe a good compromise between the benefits outlined above for C and Python? Anything opinions?

I mean someone pointing out a vulnerability in a piece of software should be a falsifiable claim, e.g. “they store their passwords in plaintext”—if it’s foss then just look at the source. You don’t need to read the entire source because you have been given a specific part of the code to look at. You need to only look at the process between the software receiving a password and its query to the database. And if it’s not foss I don’t use it, and the claim may be unfalsifiable for an outsider who isn’t bothered to try reverse engineering.

For organisations, I think name changes should be minimised. They normally are because of some kind of schism or power struggle, and even if that’s not the case, that’s what people will assume. It’s damaging reputationally and also bad for SEO. For people, change your name as much as you like idc. Every day or every hour if you like. As long as you make it clear what your current name is. If you’re changing it every hour maybe wear a name badge.

Happened to me once when I was 14. I ordered a hotdog and thought I heard my name (this place did orders by customer name) and picked it up. It was a hotdog but I didn’t remember ordering the particular toppings. I also ordered a vegan hotdog specifically. As I was eating it I gradually became more and more sure this wasn’t my order—I didn’t remember ordering these toppings and I thought this seemed like a pork hotdog. But then I felt too awkward to go back to the counter after having eaten half of it already. Sorry to whoever’s hotdog I ate.

I don’t have any answer to the “hardest addiction” thing but OP, I don’t think watching a lot of porn is inherently a problem. Sometimes people just masturbate because they’re bored, in which case you should try to get some hobbies you find more fulfilling. But if you’re masturbating because you’re horny, why not, it does no harm.

I think maybe I’m sensitive to some bad smells other people don’t get. One time someone was demonstrating to a group (including me) making chocolate and it smelled like vomit to me and I had to leave. The others weren’t bothered. This might be a personal preference thing rather than a sensing-something-undetectable thing but I’ve always hated the flavour of dairy—can’t stomach dairy milk, dairy cheese, dairy butter, etc. The vegan versions of these things are fine to me though because they don’t have that distinct “dairy” flavour whilst still having the other qualities of the product.
