The Hungarian #retrogaming steamroller keeps on going! We just got a #C64 demake of Dune II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smiQnlbqpKw

It seems kind of rough around the edges at the moment, but there's definitely a lot of potential here if the creators intend to refine it further.

@sol_hsa@mastodon.gamedev.place Yeah, I don't know how realistic this set of features really is in practice. Giving the retro folks something extra would perhaps fit the Commodore brand, but in the end, support for legacy standards is not that critical if you accept the need for an external upscaler. The most important thing here is the overall zero-BS and performance focused philosophy. Specific features can be added later if the base is well thought out.

If #Commodore really want to tap into a market with a lot of unmet demand, they should release a zero-BS "semi-dumb" TV: • support for all popular modern and legacy video connectors (including wireless options) • focus on minimal latency • snappy interface • fast startup • open-source firmware • support streaming services • no tracking, no ads, no undesired network traffic of any kind The built-in upscaler that deals with legacy signals could have tons of options for retro enthusiasts.

This is a very interesting and approachable technical breakdown of how Parking Garage Rally Circuit implemented its driving physics, and it's also a great demonstration of effective debug visualisations. Definitely worth your time if you're interested in arcade racing game mechanics.

The regime might be changing in Hungary now, but it's worth keeping in mind that over 98% of votes in this record-shattering election went to right-wing parties of various flavours. Progressives have a lot of work ahead of them if they ever hope to shift the Overton window back towards their side.

I thought ugly pixel art scaling filters are a modern scourge, but I just found out that LucasArts used to apply them in the Macintosh ports of their adventures to boost their perceived resolution.

Looking at the screenshots, they would have achieved much better results by simply hand-crafting high-resolution variants for all in-game text and leaving everything else alone.

@markmoxon At least it should be possible to make it work on the VIC-20 as a cartridge-only release. I think 16K RAM would be enough to fit all the dynamic data. Maybe 20K is needed altogether to account for self-modifying code.

@markmoxon It’s surprisingly memory efficient: all the tables needed add up to only 1.5 kilobytes (0.5 for the log, 1 for the arctan). And it’s fast indeed: the atan2 function converts 16-bit coordinates into a 10-bit angle in around 500 cycles on average. But sure, squeezing the game into 32K is basically impossible; I just about managed to get it into 48K for the Apple II by cutting out almost everything outside the gameplay itself.

I just think it’s better because you don’t have to deviate from the natural way to make dates sortable. The same applies to names: they are family name first.
