Ah, The Chase. Five episodes of silly vaguely enjoyable nonsense and then an absolute cracker of a finale. I used to dislike it, found it silly and ramshackle after the first two Dalek stories (and not as good as the novelisation), but it's comfort blanket #DoctorWho now...

You are not going to see a Labour Party always giving a line you want to wholeheartedly back because in each and every case, they'll have crunched the numbers and seen what wins votes in target seats and what loses votes. Without power, they can do nothing. Their job is not to protest, their job is not to tell the Tory govt what to do and be their moral conscience in opposition, because it doesn't work like that.

We've had four elections now where Labour has lost because it has emphasised (mostly) empathy for the unlike, fairness, and care for the underdog. Every time the UK population has veered towards selfishness and fear that The Migrant/The Workshy will "have their biscuit". Labour's now in the position where it can't back strikes, can't be pro EU, can't be pro-immigration etc because the numbers don't crunch for kind people versus people who don't really care.

Do I remember the Winter of Discontent and the media rehetoric over striking workers that led to a Thatcher landslide in 1979? No, I was still two years off from being born. But it's very accessible, famous history and people would be wise to study it - not because what the press said was necessarily true, but because vast swathes of the UK *bought* it, because the national character is sometimes regrettably unkind and unempathetic.
