I really wanted to like a bike helmet I got on sale from REI, but it made me look like The Great Gazoo. In retrospect, this could have been anticipated.

The metro train on the way back at least had scenic views of rowers on the Anacostia River and kids playing soccer at the Fields at RFK.
Oh shit, the D24 Deanwood doesn't stop at Stadium-Armory metro anymore. I was surprised to learn this as the bus sped across the East Capitol St bridge.
I walked through the Great American State Fair in DC and it is as pathetic as everyone is saying. It is extremely bare bones and what is there is just sad.
If you have a local county fair, go there instead.

My dog hates the World Cup because I make unpredictable noises, especially as during this Norway vs Senegal match. She got up off the couch and went upstairs.

Woke up with a swollen eyelid. I think I got something in my eye when I was cleaning up the garden or pond. The backyard is fighting back and it's winning.
I have a black eye from a recent medical procedure, but I have been telling people at work I got it at the UFC event. This is probably credible, even for spectators.
The fact that the hallway at work is being painted AND somebody microwaved fish definitely violates some sort of international treaty on human rights or chemical weapons.

Coming up on 30k. I was feeling sore the last 5k, but I revived at the rest stop. I had to double back to look for my cheap sunglasses, but I guess they are a sacrifice to the trail gods. Passed a guy with a tripod and telephoto lens set up to watch peregrine falcons at Point of Rocks, MD.

20k completed. Stopped for a water refill and assorted snacks: string cheese, banana, orange slices, kettle corn. What we call the coroner's puzzle. I keep passing and leapfrogging a group that is talking about something new each time, beavers, bonsai. Apparently they are only up to the "B"s.

It's a beautiful, cool day. The Potomac River is on one side and the swampy remnants of the canal on the other. The path is smooth packed gravel. I can hear the birds and water now that the scrum of walkers has spread out. About 10k so far.
On the metro out to Shady Grove to catch a shuttle bus to Whites Ferry on the C&O Canal. This will be the start of the 50k walk to Harpers Ferry today.
