I do have an optimism in my arguments that I dont need to pull anyone to our side, but that theyll wind up with us if they really start looking at their own thing and why its coming up short. Then some of yall do other parts youre good at and care about while Im onto the next 'you cant be happy with being along for the ride like this, right?'

People are really poor sports about me saying we're 'Addiction Siblings' because they describe their relationship to something in overwrought self flattering tones and I go 'Hey, just like vaping for me!'

And frankly id stunt on someone who wanted and needed to see me via cam on a call for any reason besides being just a playful smartass as I am. However thats one social engagement among many. But if we are gonna meet and its social or objective focused you kinda gotta spill the beans to even find one another about what you look like. @lykso@tiny.tilde.website @morganth@social.tchncs.de I would qualify this - most people don't like being asked for help they seemingly can't provide, like there is a resentment around 'how dare you ask me for something I can't provide, you're humiliating me'. It's a weird faux pas for sure, but it comes from the place you're thinking of - people want to be a help if they can be (and think of themselves as such) and don't like feeling unhelpful if pressed.

@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io This is one thing that I do kind of regret about not taking my own education more seriously and really trying to hone some chops - my writing. My long form writing especially. I can do walkthroughs, mockups, SOP sheets, etc etc, but trying to illustrate a complicated or complex idea, I really don't have the chops to articulate to the degree where I'm validated the person reading it gets it, the first or 2nd time.

@polotek@social.polotek.net Totally, and how we're evaluated and present our work in coworker satisfaction and captured metrics really just lends itself to 'ask questions, ask for help, you won't get blown up and looked down upon professionally doing so' at least at the more put together and nicer places to work. There's a lot less adversarial interactions and much more collaboration than what I've seen in supporting some engineers (the software ones were way more in their own head about their ideas and instincts than the aerospace/satellite engineers were about theirs, but those aerospace engineers were part of much much larger teams with specific focus on part of the end product, rather than the whole thing front to back, UI to database connections and architecture.) I really honed in on the being told 'nuh uh, you're wrong' or even helpful checks on setting expectations for others.

I wonder this all the time when it comes to vocations and professions where that seems to matter more. Edit: There are times where I genuinely wonder if I am autistic just because it's like...okay, I got about half of that going, but I don't have the fear of adverse reaction or strife from being misunderstood. Like, I'll reframe something a million times if need be or allow another person to do it a million times until I find agreement. If someone corrects me, cool, if everyone lets me just walk around with my pants around my ankles while I wonder aloud 'What, what is it? What's up, what's funny?' then hopefully they book me for a party or somesuch.
