Air conditioning should always be a last resort - after a society has utilized all the more efficient ways of keeping things cool. A lot of buildings in the US wouldn't need A/C if they were simply built properly, surrounded by sensible city planning. Drive around the south and you'll see large developments with houses that are designed for a cool environment, but which are located in very hot locales. Beyond stupid.

@jefftk@mastodon.mit.edu It's really just whether you have a lot of writing, with your name attached to it, that it has within it's training data. None of this is particularly new. ML tools have been able to do something akin to this for years. And before that people would use statistical methods to do something similar. But if you're a rando with a small online presence, it's pretty unlikely to be successful. Most likely it would pick someone who had a bigger presence with a similar writing style.

@xinit @sol_hsa @dadbod In high competition, low margin, businesses (most electronics) - even small differences in manufacturing costs can determine who gets the sale. In high status, high margin, businesses - they're selling luxury goods that consumers use to signal something about themselves. And so stuff like 1mm thinner is how consumers signal their superiority. You (and I) are not typical consumers unfortunately. Most people don't really think about repairability when buying one, and see a phone as something you replace for a better model every few years.

@xinit @sol_hsa @dadbod I suspect that it's less of a choice, and more that manufacturers aren't even thinking about repairability. For most devices the margins are low, design cycles are short - and so the focus is on building something as cheaply as possible that will sell. Until repairability becomes a selling point (which it isn't currently), I don't see that changing. Obviously some manufacturers don't want you to repair their devices (cough - Apple), but I doubt that's true for your average Chinese manufacturer.

@celesteh@post.lurk.org I certainly agree with this. But I'm not sure that a list that contains a number of contemporary and well known Japanese composers (for example) is super helpful if that's the purpose of it. A Japanese American in the 1920s? Sure. A Japanese citizen living in Japan today? Hardly. Persons of Color is a very broad term, that doesn't typically mean much outside the US and is poorly defined even in the US (e.g. Hispanic - which includes everyone from S. America including wealthy descendants of European settlers).

Schillinger's stuff has always seemed like it could be potentially useful, but his books are very hard going. This book is far clearer. One thing I've found very helpful is to create functions for each of Schillinger's techniques. His stuff really lends itself to this, and it makes it far easier to understand. At some point I may share the stuff I've created for CommonMusic.
