Himalayan balsam in the early morning light. I know it’s invasive but I can’t help finding it pretty. #Flowers #Nature

Ever have one of those days where you just can't figure out a bit of code that should be simple? I'm trying to put together a big `` template in an #11ty nunjucks shortcode. I have an external image store and optimiser, and so I just want to pass the filename so that I can piece together the correct query url to resize/optimise the image. Can I get that to work? Can I bobbins! It seems to be trying to insert an object rather than interpreting the filename as a plain string to insert into another string. Any help given might stop me exploding with frustration. I expect that I am doing something dumb.

Not a good start to the day: the handle of my favourite, handmade coffee mug basically exploded in my hand, while the mug was full of coffee. Much breakage, such a mess. RIP favourite mug.

@neatnik@social.lol A while ago, but then using Joanna’s Status.log app recently it asked me for authentication again, which I did. I think that was before posting the second post which didn’t cross post. The one before that I created in the Status.lol web app and got no authentication request. Before those two, everything worked fine from the web or the app.

Of course, this self-hosting success is highly dangerous because now I’m thinking, why don’t I just spin up a VM, install NixOS with Caddy and friends instead of using a static host service. I’ve run a VM in the past to host my site but I’m trying to be a Sensible Person ™️ now and remember why I stopped doing that. tldr: you have the freedom to set things up how you want but you are responsible for cleaning up the mess when you do something stupid. 😏

I posted this to status.lol with cross-posting to Mastodon toggled on but it (and another post on Sunday) didn’t actually make it to social.lol for some reason. Precious posts have always worked fine. Paging @neatnik@social.lol ?

I’ve just set up a private, self-hosted, Tailscale-protected Forgejo instance on my home Unraid server, and it works!! I’ve still got runners to set up but I’m really chuffed. #selfhosted #forgejo

In related news, does anyone have experience of https://statichost.eu Their hosting seems admirably simple, their docs and site are clear and uncluttered, and they charge a fair price. However, they don't yet have a CDN (they have one in beta though) and I can't see a way to automatically provision a certificate. I'm weighing them up against Bunny.net, which also seems great but much more difficult to understand. Any experience of either would be helpful in making a decision! I'm looking to leave Netlify for a variety of reasons, one of which is wanting to be hosted on EU servers.

Sorry for the long hiatus on my blog. Things have happened (family, health, heatwave) which have occupied my attention. However, I'm also now trying to convert my blog to 11ty, move to a new host, and to a new git forge. As often happens in these situations, I keep thinking, "I'll just wait till the site move is done before I post..." so you could be waiting some time.

@neatnik@social.lol I feel the same way about anything AI produced. I always tell my students that I would much rather read an essay that they wrote themselves, with all the little slips, lack of polish, structural problems and so on, than read soulless *blah* that says nothing about how they are thinking.

I've got a question for the Masto hive mind on behalf of Mr. Bsag.

He doesn't sleep well and is very sensitive to sound (#AuDHD), so he wears noise-cancelling headphones a lot, especially at night to play white noise etc., when outside to mask traffic noise, and so on.

He has a couple of pairs of AKG N60s, but they eventually wear out and they are getting hard to source used.

Does anybody have recommendations for headphones similar to these that are:

  • on ear (not in-ear or over-ear)
  • have active or passive noise cancellation
  • preferably don't have touch or physical buttons on the shells that can control phone calls. Volume/play/pause etc. is fine if not too sensitive, or can be turned off in an app

Thanks in advance! Boosts very welcome.
