@redfern@wandering.shop Sadly I also see the first one expressed as, "I never want to suffer again, and I don't care if other people have to suffer to accomplish that." This same dichotomy shows up at a national/ethnic level as well. I express it as "This should never happen again" vs "This should never happen to us again".

@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io @pluralistic@mamot.fr Managing VTCoSy (as it was called) was my intro to Unix sysadmin as a profession, one which has lasted me now over 35 years. :D The IP address is still burned into my brain all these years later. I remember implementing some integration with Usenet and working on coordinating with the student government to do announcements and such, but those details (unlike the IP address) have gotten fuzzy over the years...

All the furor over Virginia's redistricting vote reminds me yet again that the reason "gerrymandering" is possible, is the Federal law requiring Representatives to be elected in single-member districts. There is no *Constitutional* requirement for this. Except for that federal law, states would be free to instead have *proportional* representation, which would better reflect the diversity of their populations. (Germany, for example, has had proportional representation for a long time.)

@arstechnica I come from a family of educators (between parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles I have eight people who have taught at levels K-12 to college) and had often thought of pivoting my IT career into academia. The past couple years made me give up that idea. Fighting the AI trend sounds like just too much work at my age.

@FediThing @futurebird It's the idea that because they're here "illegally", she thinks that they and their child are "undeserving" -- note her "taking up resources from the county" line. She's one of those people that think that educating a child is an "expense" rather than an investment.

Especially good for those of us who live right next to the border; I cross into Mexico with it practically every week.
