@VirginiaHolloway@urbanists.social I think you and I are on the same side here, so I'm not sure why you're responding with sarcasm. By "not functionally possible" I meant that it would quite literally cause a massive amount of dysfunction or breakdown in their own bureaucracy in many areas of government, and by "provoke quite a significant constitutional crisis" I meant that the Supremacy Clause of the constitution here is unambiguous, so if states tried to violate it, and it wasn't stopped by the Supreme Court, or if it was stopped, and they ignored its decision, the fundamental structure of the United States as it is now would in effect be null and void. If that happened, everyone, not just trans people, would have much bigger problems than IDs with the correct gender marker. While any nightmare scenario is possible, this one in particular does not seem plausible. But I understand and generally share your concern.

If you are #trans and a US citizen, you should absolutely, 100% apply for a passport this year, whether you plan to travel or not. Yes, it costs $$, but you can self-select your gender without bureaucratic BS (thanks, Joe), and it lasts 10 years and is valid ID everywhere in the world. Whatever fascist laws your GOP reps are proposing in your state legislature about gender markers on IDs, you will have a federal document that reflects your actual gender. And if necessary, you can use it to leave the country.
