Nothing productive is happening om twitter anymore.

I'm ashamed to admit I still have a secret twitter account I keep most because I've been under the impression as long as I've been around that as toxic as it is, twitter was the place where real direct conversation was happening between global leaders, industry professionals and regular people. But every time I log in now I remember that's just not the case anymore. There is nothing productive happening on twitter anymore. Accounts are run by social media managers, press teams, or an AI. The entire platform is drowned out by the voices of whoever the CEO likes the most. There is no reason to login anymore. Why? To see the latest propoganda from state funded accounts or what my local politician's social media manager has to say? Real conversation doesn't happen there anymore.

I've long been an advocate of open source local AI models and been an active supporter of both the physical and digital infrastructure to build and enable a distributed future of the technology and not a centralized one. For a while there I will admit it looked like we may have been beat, as the most important new capabilities were becoming centralized to the frontier models, and the few open source options were increasingly out of reach of the average professional.

But I'm here to deliver some good news on this and say that this is no longer the case. With the release of Gemma 4, Qwen 3.5, GLM-4.7 flash, and lots of others, the gap between open and frontier models is closing and power efficiency and resource requirement bars are dropping dramatically to access agentic tools. Don't sell your soul to OpenAI or Anthropic, control your own infrastructure.

@anon_opin I would just like to add something here. I DO live in the praries of Montana, well mountains more so, and drive a pickup truck. And I'd just like to remind everyone that we WANT smaller trucks. I remember when I bought mine looking everywhere for a reasonably priced s10, or ranger that I could work on, would be simple, and cheap. But NOOOOO, we can't have small economic vehicles because they don't meet "emission standards" in the US, and our government even systemically removed these cars from the supply through state-backed programs. Which may sound like its an attempt to help the enviornment but in fact does just the opposite. See American's would love smaller trucks, they're cheaper, fuel efficient, and you don't have to struggle to park the damn things in a Walmart. The reason we're stuck with this though, like most horrible things, traces back to Ronald Reagan. See during the Reagan era a bill was passed which set a fuel efficiency standard on vehicles that said car manufacturers must make vehicles a bit more fuel efficient each year. This worked for a little bit but soon we reached the limits of how efficient engineers could refine a design between iterations, which led to the realization of a loophole. Someone noticed that the method of calculating fuel efficiency was based on the size of the wheelbase of the vehicle compared to its efficiency, so if engineers couldn't change one side of the ratio, they'd just change the other. And here we are after 30 fucking years of watching vehicles balloon out in size to the point that its ridiculous. And now me and MANY other American's who do require a pickup to haul feed, livestock, materials or any number of things, are forced to choose between paying an unreasonable amount for one of the few remaining older models, or buying a newer one. And now I'm here stuck with a "half ton" truck thats larger our old 3500 from the 90s. My point in all of this is please stop blaming americans and thinking this is some cultural phenomena that makes us want to buy cars that cost 3 times as much and get a 16 miles to the gallon. We don't. But car companies want you to think we do.

Controversial opinion but in retrospect, Nickleback was actually really funny and cool.

I must say I loved the concept behind @accrescent@infosec.exchange when I heard about it as someone on Graphene OS but I'm beginning to worry about the project. I remember a few months back them saying they needed donations to keep the project running, which they got, and a bunch of info on a short term roadmap they were going to implement, and since then I haven't seen a single update to the platform or blog. The github had very minor updates a month ago but otherwise completely dry. Does anyone know if this project is still viable?

I don't understand who keeps perpetuating the design philosophy that just putting your configuration options in yml config files and assuming users will understand what your syntax is by putting in the documentation "simple yml based configuration" and nothing else is an acceptable development practice but its gotta stop here and now.

Buying a google pixel and installing grapheneOS on it is a much better move for your privacy and mental health than buying any of these crappy e-reader phones or some flip phone that only works over unencrypted communication channels. The rise of 'dumb phones' has lead to an influx of poorly build, insecure phones built by people with no business developing complex tech products. What I find 90% of the time is that people buy these products, realize they actually do rely on features like maps, good cameras, banking apps and all the other smart conveinences of the modern world. Ultimately they end up throwing the device away or in a junk drawer and it just becomes another e-waste product. If you want to actually break free from your phone addiction use a product that gives you the conveinence you want but doesn't try to guide your towards addiction every day, a stock grapheneOS phone is basically a dumb smart phone and thats how it should be.

What is the anti-AI endgame at this point? It feels like everyone who's anti-AI is just praying for the bubble to burst. Like do you think when it happens that OpenAI is just going to close their doors and say "well we had a good run but lets close it down?" No! What's going to happen is what happens every time a bubble bursts and any smaller AI companies will go under or be absorbed by the few remaining ones and we'll just be left with 2 or 3 companies that control everything, and instead of fostering alternatives and trying to keep up with and help contribute to open stacks that can't be locked behind paywalls, the vast majority of the open-source community has just decided to complain about things changing and hope it doesn't.
