@WPalant@infosec.exchange hmmm so the scam, a URL under recaptcha.net, is owned by google inc. Out of curiosity I tried to open that URL, but it won't process on my Murena phone. (Wrong version of :Google services"). So I guess it is a captcha to 1) test if you have a google or apple (approved) mobile phone or 2) test if NSA can read your communications on the device. "Interesting" definition of being human!

@WPalant@infosec.exchange if there is one thing you don't do better than a computer as a human, it is reading the qr code, must be a scam!

@futtta not really, except that I know of no really reliable tool to assess AI authorship. Maybe she saved earlier versions of her text, that'd be convincing. Otherwise just challenge the teachers to show her what cues make them think it is AI generated and not authentic. They probably also do not know ;-)

@caseynewton@mastodon.social it's also academic freedom to stop doing things once the breakthrough insights have been achieved. "Operations" do not remain at university, only "explorations", and we spin-off, hand over or close down lines of work that are "complete" from a research perspective. I.e., these changes can also be explained by shifting attention to new, potentially more exciting breakthrough research. It's just guessing the reasons, but I wouldn't immediately assume academic freedom to be at risk.

@johannes_lehmann@fediscience.org interesting policy! I think the "instead" is not 100% correct; you must always publish a preprint, but I think you may publish in a journal too. However, they will no longer pay article processing costs (limiting the journal options indeed). I guess that if all works are available as pre-print and journals cannot charge APC, they will have less interest to publish these papers - so it may eventually raise a question of how to organize peer review.

@graue@social.coop nice post, I agree. I do wonder how these positions may change with growth of the community; not offering search may not be sufficient to keep the trolls away, for example, such that at some point the advantages for discovery may outweigh its disadvantages. Time will tell!
