@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io Not quite away from the computer, but I similarly wrote some years ago about how I liked to write hypothetical code in Notepad and would sometimes then use it as real code: https://scott.mn/2014/08/25/coding_in_notepad/

I love Vim, but it's not challenging anymore. They should add a hard mode where if you press any of the arrow keys, it exits without saving. j/k and h/l only.

RE: @amydiehl@mstdn.social

This is so typical. When I was an interviewer at a supposedly progressive/enlightened tech company, I would hear others on interview loops with me rationalize away mediocre white male candidates' signs of weak performance, when they would have been quick to ding a female or Black/Latine candidate for the same things.

Niche complaint: why does the vorbiscomment tool not work with Ogg Opus files?! You went to all that trouble to separate the file format (Ogg) from the codec (Opus/Vorbis) and then coupled your metadata to a specific codec?

RE: @inthehands@hachyderm.io

We recently moved BikeHopper (https://github.com/bikehopper) from Kubernetes with config in git, to Coolify. I was nervous about the click-ops nature of Coolify—lacking a history of changes and so forth—but it’s worked pretty well.

@rm Complete rejection is a much more viable option than it is with cars. We're much earlier in the adoption curve for this technology, and that's exactly why it's critical right now to say no. As for the dichotomy between usefulness and destructiveness, we only have one Earth. When the resource usage of something destroys Earth's livability forever, how can we speak of that thing being "useful"? It won't be useful long. @dreid

@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io I had left there by then, but I too had had excessive faith in myself and fellow employees’ ability to stop the company from doing anything horrible — without having built the necessary organizing structures to actually wield collective power.

When I joined #mastodon, I just wanted an open-source #twitter clone.

I got more than that. Subtle design differences made for healthier conversations in ways I wasn't expecting.

Here's a blog post to try to capture those differences and why they matter. https://scott.mn/2022/10/29/twitter_features_mastodon_is_better_without/
