At the same time I feel guilty for not fighting so hard, for letting ideals give way to pragmatism. Am I the boomer now? Do I stand in the way of idealism? How do I put my knowledge to work with the urgency it demands? I have a few big tasks ahead of me in the next week. Hopefully they’ll give me an opportunity to take note of my place in this bizarro world and I’ll find a direction to push towards. Ain’t no motivation like the end of a chapter.

My cousin just celebrated his 50th birthday and said pretty much the same thing: small moments get more important as you age. You calibrate and appreciate. You’re not done—not by a long shot—but you’re more focused on what you get than what you deserve.

Things feel so much heavier in my forties so far than they did in my thirties. I know decades don’t really matter and these hard divisions are artificial but… I think you know more than you ever will when you’re a young adult and then you spend the whole rest of your life slowly realizing that everything has a caveat. You carve away what you superficially understood until you’re left with a murky middle ground that’s far less impressive but more honest.

Ending the week feeling good about the state of my app, and honestly feeling pretty great about the workload for the rest of the summer. Feels like I have room to breathe and choose what I want to work on, unlike last year where it was all a scramble. I’ve been replacing a lot of table views with collection views since it’s becoming more obvious every day that Apple isn’t paying attention to table views any longer. Honestly I just wish they’d deprecate them officially.

Last year US Sen. Moreno introduced a bill prohibiting and forcibly stripping dual citizenship, the IRS ‘erroneously’ shared taxpayer data with immigration officials, and now the IRS is quietly considering adding “check this box if you are a non-U.S. citizen or have dual citizenship” which must be answered under penalty of perjury. I can’t imagine any good reason for an official roster of those with multiple passports to exist.

I’ve been watching Half Man and I am at a loss for words to describe it. So potent, so terrifying, and so familiar as someone with a single sibling—a 6 years older brother who was physically violent toward me when he was a teenager. Especially as a gay man terrified of rejection by family. It’s hitting so hard.

I flew up to my old place, packed everything up, and immediately left in my truck on a 2-day journey to Vegas. An unexpected road closure turned yesterday’s 9-hour drive into a 12-hour one which seriously wore me out, but there were some beautiful views.

I did not expect the 7800 ft. elevation summit nor the three major snow storms. Fun fact: cruise control stops working when your grille is covered in ice. 🥶

I’m sleeping in what will become the guest bedroom in my new house and I keep walking past the door by accident. I just realized that the rooms are laid out like my first two houses and this was the guest bedroom in one and my ex’s office in the other, so they were rooms I rarely went into. So funny how your brain maps things like that.

My tax preparer told me two weeks ago that I owed an eyewatering amount of money and today they corrected an oversight that flipped that amount owed to a refund and then some.

I’m of course thrilled that I’m getting money back and that my estimated tax calculations weren’t wildly off last year after all, but also… that’s a huge difference and it’s a big emotional rollercoaster to have ridden based on a single oopsie.

@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social There's a big difference between a Vision Pro Air and Siri glasses that'd likely run app extensions and be more focused on brief interactions like the watch. Only one of those makes the work I've done for the platform so far worthwhile. From the outside, it's hard to tell if this is a written off product line or a HomePod waiting for a revival. Until then, dismal sales/usage numbers are hard to ignore.
