@SmudgeTheInsultCat@mas.to depressing - but characteristic of a certain kind of US Christian, not all of us!

Formerly vicar of fabulous #AlstonMoor (in the 🇬🇧, sadly no longer in the 🇪🇺), now working as a prison chaplain
Deeply concerned about #ClimateCrisis, #Injustice, growing use of propaganda/manipulation to incite far right #Populism. Personal account, own (not official church or prison) views. he/him

@dgar@aus.social in British usage, inflammable means it can catch fire (be inflamed), the opposite is non-inflammable.
American usage prefers flammable and non-flammable, hence the confusion

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st I think there is also another reason: if there are benches, people will sit down and wait. If there are no benches, people are more likely to wander into one of the shops/cafés/outlets and spend money

@OneInterestingFact@mastodon.ie @dgar@aus.social I remember learning this at school nearly 50 years ago - I think non-inflammable has rather fallen into disuse since Americanisms have become so prevalent.

@USelaine@mastodon.online read "Momo" by Michael Ende on the subject - brilliant!

@pr3d@social.tchncs.de @Fpccraig@mastodon.social @alice@lgbtqia.space @krystalhosting@mastodon.social honestly, I don't even understand the question - I'm not that tech savvy! But I've found them very responsive - maybe just ask them?

@SamanthaJaneSmith@lgbtqia.space @dgar@aus.social thanks for the extra erudition (which I couldn't be bothered to look up!)
I find this analysis of Palantir deeply disturbing. Not least because of the foothold they have in the UK and so many other countries outside the US.

@CoinOfNote@hcommons.social @numismatics@fedigroups.social were they the same as UK postal orders? You can buy one for, say £10 (plus a small fee) and post it to another person, who can exchange it for £10 at another post office - or if it's crossed, you pay it into a bank account. Safer than posting bank notes, doesn't require the sender to have a bank account, and can't bounce like a cheque.

@fionaorkneynews@mastodon.scot I confess my first thought on reading this headline was "wouldn't public buckets be more effective?"

@smutmag are you in the US? It might be helpful to say in which country you are proposing a general strike, for the benefit of Mastodon users in other parts of the world!
Replying to
@Irenetherogue @smutmag not my intention. But if this is an organised thing, it's helpful to know where it's happening

@RichardJMurphy@mas.to love this infographic explaining what economics is - or should be!

@Sadsquatch@mastodon.social also essential information - ability to cater for dietary requirements (preferably by labelling on the menu, rather than a generic 'xx welcome' which might just mean one dish is suitable)

@garak@puntarella.party @Ashedryden@xoxo.zone I wouldn't count on it. Admittedly not a business, but one of the 6 churches I was responsible for was removed from Google maps, despite being in existence for 250 years, because we couldn't prove to Google's satisfaction that we existed! Photos, website, electricity bill, bank statement not sufficient apparently
