Writing sometimes feels like 90% being incredibly stuck and 10% actually writing

I met a lot of great people at CablesOfResistance and in particular I met some really great researchers and great research work.

I've been eyeing doing a Master's degree for a while but I don't want to do pure computer science, I'm **much** more interested in how tech works within society, and how we can fix what Big Tech has done with it. Are there any degree programs out there with this as a field of study? What keywords should I use in searching? Any universities I could look into?

I thought I made some notes on university recommendations from the people I talked to, but... my note-taking failed me. Argh.

So... can anyone help me out? (Boosts appreciated!)

@johannab @fediprofile @ben Personally as someone who'd like to #getFediHired I want to filter by location in particular (as a European, I am not interested in US jobs) as well as locations the employer is happy to recruit from (e.g. can the employer take remote employees?). Filtering by job role would be great but might be more challenging technically

I don't think this comes up in any of the talks directly, but my mind circled back to this during the Degrowth talk...

Knowledge of tech is a kind of power (e.g. if I run a community server I have power over the tech and the way this community works, and this is A Problem), but as a tech worker in a company I don't have a lot of power (e.g. if I don't want to build the product my company wants me to build I am out of a job). This is a tension that I find hard to reconcile as a tech worker.

Having the way we share and receive information being effectively controlled by a small number of people and limited by technical skill and access to capitalism is, I suspect, a significant part of why we have terrible outcomes; there's very little democratic oversight because what is actually going on in tech is poorly understood. And so it's far too easy for democratically elected leaders to get bamboozled by tech barons.
