I'm a senior+ level software developer with 20+ YOE, based in Canada, ET.

Most of my work experience has been on the back-end: distributed systems, web applications, services, systems-level projects, infrastructure, etc. I am flexible and can work on a wide range of projects.

I work in several languages: C, C++, Haskell, Javascript, Python. I can handle OCaml, Lisp, C#, F#. I am Rust curious.

Worked on the garden today with my partner and our kid. A robin decided to join us and hang around while we worked. He seemed happy. Pulling up weeds helped him access the grubs underneath.

Adding special attack for MISERY in Black Fort, refactoring some UI code and adding dialogs to make messaging/telegraphing work better. I'm enjoying this phase of the project, systems are coming together and I'm beginning to focus on shoring up the game design and shaping it into whatever it will end up being.

Also bitter that if you get the opportunity to work in Haskell or Lisp, and then move on or lose that opportunity, the likelihood that you'll get another opportunity is slim to none. And if you had worked on it for a significant number of years you now have a resume gap where you weren't using more "employable" languages, making getting hired again a bit harder.

Alrighty, progress on the merchant UI. Merchants have inventories. I added some icons for the items in game. The merchant event dialog displays the inventory in a neat little grid.

Didn't make any progress yesterday... just had time to apply for jobs and pass out for the afternoon as I wasn't feeling well.

Much better today though!

When you tell people, "I'm making a game in C with a couple of libraries," most often they will reply with some kind of shock or disbelief.

You're not using Unity? You don't use Unreal 5? You're not vibe coding it? How do you get anything done?

How much code do you think it takes? It's like... not that much when you start working on it. Don't be so obsessed with frameworks and tooling.

Be obsessed with understanding and learning.

Slop is indeed the future of GenAI programming unless you can make sure the training data has only bug-free, well-architected code that future developers will understand; that the alignment doesn’t over-fit to the training data, and you can continually update that training data set with enough examples of all the new innovations. At that point you might as well be writing the code yourself. You can’t steal enough examples from the bleeding edge to keep up.

These systems generate code based off their training set. There are som interesting “behaviours,” that we don’t quite understand. But that’s not going to change the fundamental principles. The network will approximate some f within epsilon given enough resources… but it will reach limits before any more input will improve epsilon.

I remain doubtful that we’ll get much more than slop.
