That's a helpful way to think about one of the conceptual problems: are they conscious, do they think. That is: if the answer is, do they fit in the capitalist nexus in the right way, then the answer is yes. We could call this the Altman test for thinking and consciousness.

the text is a lot of happy talk about Gemini.

I use Google Maps and Google Drive, and otherwise try not to use Google at all. I can't figure out what they are saying here -- I don't have their Gemini app installed, I have scrutinized the settings for what I do have, as far as I can tell I am *not* using Gemini.

So what the hell is going on here?

@nextcloud@mastodon.xyz I think standard practice in big organizations is to get solutions provided by big well-known providers who wrap everything in a big blanket of comfort. IBM in the day. Adobe now. My university is a Microsoft shop. Comfort is things like support, predicted lifetime of the systems, community of users, ease of installation, conversion, maintenance. What happens if all your skilled people leave? Who do you call? Pay the money make it easy.

@McWabbit Curious about what's going on. I just checked the price at Newegg of a SAMSUNG 990 EVO 1TB SSD I bought last April. It has gone up about 60%. That's huge, but it's not 400%. I should add -- I'm certainly on board with the thought expressed here. There's SO MUCH here that is a deep problem, I'm not clear that this chip-futures-buying thing adds much.
