@feisty_lemming@zeroes.ca @MatWright@mastodon.social Del Monte just posted an article where they stated they're destroying thousands of fruit trees. No demand. And the booze boycott. But yeah, another article, one in seven Americans have been near a mass shooting. Like WTAF???

@cstross@wandering.shop I'm told (From Indigenous groups and friends) that naturally cured tobacco is nothing like the commercial variety. I have never tried it, but they're allowed to grow it here for personal consumption. To sell it, they have to comply with some laws that sort of spoil it. It can still be harmful of course, but not anywhere near the amount that commercial tobacco is. (It's generally not inhaled) Plus there is the sacred and ceremonial angle to it for them. It's a very small percentage of the total amount used, so I hope they cut them some slack. https://turtlelodgetradingpost.ca/collections/semah

@cstross@wandering.shop Any kind of magnifying device that would help? I'm thinking of the same thing sort of a back-lit magnifier on a stick thingie. Especially at night. Because of back issues if it's a regular sized HC book I prop it up on my kitchen table and read there, in a very comfy plush office chair. As for surgery, I commiserate. It's been two months since the last back surgery, feels like two years...been overdoing it because it sucks to not be able to do minor things, and there's at least another month to go before I can get down to physio. Tried it too soon, same reason as above. All it did was make me feel nauseous mostly. Overdid it again. Anyhow, reading from regular paper is a lot easier on the eyes. I use the phone generally only when I'm travelling and need to look something up, or waiting around in a doctor's office. Going back to old school typing is probably out of the question right?🙃 (no, seriously hope it heals quickly for you) https://youtu.be/3nlbfZGFKuI?si=ll7MiE71jpBNtO0g

@cstross Not to mention plagiarism and theft of wages from the artists that created the works to begin with. There is never enough money for them. They could never spend it in thousands of years. It's just killing capitalism, not to mention people, and taking money out of circulation and then just sitting on it, like Smaug the Dragon and his gold pile.

@cstross@wandering.shop Can't find the quote, or meme now, probably by Crazy Horse. Said something to the effect that all they had to do was wait for the white man's greed (or idiocy) to destroy themselves and they they could take back the land that is rightfully theirs.

@cstross@wandering.shop Some of the rail lines (all of them?) in town are dated by the year of production. In our case, 1908. I'd calculated one high speed rail line just paralleling the Trans Canada Hwy main route at 7,476 km (4,645 mi) roughly $1,021,900,000,000 CDN. Not including going through mountains ($300million a mile more), muskeg (see mountains), buying trains and buildings, hiring personnel, etc. So, it ain't gonna happen here. Production costs based on the current California costs of them building a HSR line. Going through California mountain range is costing them about $500,000,000 USD a mile. Costs of course are increasing every year...and thanks to the tariffs I'd hate to guess what they're paying for that line now.

@alcinnz @hugo We've always had the power, given voluntarily for promises of adequate income, housing, healthcare. But they've reneged on all that and still want to control everyone, for free. They're tearing down homeless camps, summer tents, with bulldozers, police and or military, that's how badly they want the control back.

@abartlet @hugo Christian work ethic BS. If you're too sick, too old, not intelligent enough to become a professional, it's your own damned fault and you get nothing. They cannot stand anyone doing better, even if it costs them nothing, and often will decrease the need for healthcare, policing, etc.
