@Tutanota@mastodon.social The counter point is that the Linux kernel, particularly on out if update devices but even on quarterly patching, gets a kernel exploit per month at the moment. It is swiss cheese. Users will press anything, without fear nor understanding.

No reason to expect anything different here. Perhaps why they like it, another landlord subsidy and a kick for the property market.

None of the AI developments are in any way similar, as I see them, unless maintainers resign rather than accept work from AI tools they would otherwise accept.

@miramarmike@cloudisland.nz This brings back memories: I was a High School sysadmin once. As was traditional at the times nice names were given to each. My theme was female names - the first server was Jessie. I named the library server "Dame Edna", and the backup console "Sir Les (Patterson)". The librarians asked (in a friendly way) if that was some comment on them, but it was just my strange sense of humor.

@BrentToderian@mastodon.online One small hope is this:

  • Like the calculation for rockets, where each kg of rocket/payload/fuel increases the fuel required recursively.

  • In an EV, the range can be extended or cost reduced best by trimming other weight. Perhaps some of that might be by trimming size.

@mhoye@cosocial.ca Yeah, even with the previous technology it was clear that modular, repeatable, factory built batteries were changing the energy landscape. When we compare with the lead times and cost uncertainty of real world landscape projects like "Snowy 2.0" and "Lake Onslow" (to name a couple at my end of the world), the batteries are going to win. Not by doing exactly the same thing, but by their own path. (Needs overbuild of intermittent renewables).

@darkuncle@infosec.exchange I like unrolling my own cryptography instead!

Samba has uses for single DES. Slowly being eradicated, but likely with us but off by default for a long time thanks to NTLMv1.

The cryptographic library we chose, GnuTLS, did not expose DES, only DES-CBC.

CBC chaining requires an Initialization Vector (IV) and we must choose the IV, ideally at random.

But if set to all zeros and only one round of DES is performed, out we get is raw DES, but we can swear we don't do our own crypto...

Via a different parody I was directed at this lovely bit of musical IT nostalgia and our recurring need to just rewrite our over complex systems.

Loved all the references, and having been at ground zero for the infamous Samba4 rewrite, it got me in the feels.

@hugo Even simpler than that, the idea that others are getting something for nothing, the classic Dole Bludger myth, creates an incredible toxicity to such universal payments. We insist to only support the deserving poor who must chronically demonstrate their need, and must do tasks to show they are not falling into the sin of idleness. I do wish it were otherwise.

Just like Samba deveopers (pretty much) have to use GitLab.com to submit patches, and most of the rest of the world has to use GitHub. This is going to remain very difficult to avoid :-(
