In the department of "internal screaming intensifies," one of the regulars we have, known for significant amounts of paperwork and paper printing on hand, was asking for help about putting information into what I assumed was a blank form, and I thought I would find a non-fillable PDF on the other end.

Instead, this person was using ChatGPT, Esq. with the intention of filing a motion in court, and wanted me to help them fill in the blanks in the generated text, then print the finished item.

@NorcalGma2@sfba.social The Tigers may have to take this year off and get healthy again, which is something they're used to having to do. But they'll definitely appreciate the energy and the hustle that Summer can provide for them, regardless of how healthy or winning the team is.

@nomad@masto.hackers.town It would, indeed, but most of our Friends groups aren't that involved in things, and the bigger kicker is that our administration would never allow such a thing, because that might be "political" and "everyone knows" that libraries and books are apolitical things and everyone has the freedom to interact with them in whatever way they would like without fear of being told their opinions are wrong or antisocial.

I know that if I said anything, I'd only get back "limited public forum, time, place, manner," because that is the response you have to give, but finding out a local Moms for (White, Christian) Liberty group is having a "celebrating America's 250th" thing in one of my locations' meeting rooms, promising all kinds of fun activities and crafts for the kiddos, it's the kind of thing where I wish I could say "No. You are opposed to libraries. Go away until you stop lying about us and our books."

Oh, and one other thing: As I was getting library cards set up for some kids, their grownup was reciting the telephone number and it ended in "6-7."

If you are familiar with the meme, you know what gesture the kid made at that. If not, https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/67-meme can get you up to speed.

I noticed, and I pointed out that I had noticed. The kid seemed entirely unbothered at either having been caught out memeing or that a grownup of some age knew what the meme was.

The kids are all right, I guess?

As I quipped to my coworkers at the time, "If I wasn't sure I'm damn good at my job, I might think I was in the wrong profession." Because this happens all the time, and while it could be the mask (yes, still), it was still happening before masking became a good idea. There's something intrinsically terrifying to a certain age, I guess, about having a grownup move from their level to your level and existing relatively close to you on that level. (I am still very good at my job, just not this.)

Yesterday was fun. I got to hear someone compliment the Latest Kate-on-whiteboard copy-drawings that I do, so now I have hard with my own ears what others have been telling me about them.

Also, as we were about to close, a little one was ready to have a floor tantrum about having to leave. I popped down to the floor to say hello, and instead of a floor tantrum, the child set up the wail of terror at having been Perceived by someone they found terrifying in the moment. Mission accomplished?

@AzulCrescent In the interest of crossing streams, perhaps the two part series of @girlonthenet's "I want to be loved" can help. https://www.girlonthenet.com/blog/i-want-to-be-loved/ (part 1, about wrestling with the vulnerability that comes from admitting you might want someone to love you) and https://www.girlonthenet.com/blog/but-not-at-any-cost/ (part 2, about how finding people who are good means both looking for the specifics of someone and standing up for yourself when a partner is a boundary-violator or otherwise worse than being without.)

Performative message about National Library Workers Day from the chief of the org, trying to get us to believe we're valued and important in the middle of a reorg that continues to ravage the people who do the most important work for the system.

I fielded some questions from a person yesterday who wanted to know why we had changed hours and was unimpressed with the official explanation of trying to standardize the experience across our locations. Despite being "community-focused" and such.

@jessamyn@glammr.us The must difficult part about fighting off the national coordinated campaigns is that they're very good at astroturfing, and they can often find a local willing to do their dirty work for them, which defeats all the work that's been done to tighten up processes so that only locals and cardholders can initiate the procedures. There are ways that we can match their contempt for us with contempt of our own, but it requires the entire chain to be on board with it.

If you put it like that, it makes the objections sound almost reasonable. Until you remember that (https://www.akimbocomics.com/?p=924) not all stories that are created are for people who want to soar among the clouds. And that "young adult" often means they are still finding a sense of who they are, and looking for stories that reflect or are analogous to their own. Disappearing stories is about closing off reality, and while that appeals to fascism, it backfires at a near 100% rate.

ALA just put out their State of Libraries report, and with it, the top 11 challenged books of 2025. (https://www.ala.org/news/2026/04/american-library-association-releases-2025-most-challenged-books-list-national-library)

What are the likely objections to these books?

Trafficking of girls, queer (gay), queer (gender), too sexy for the teenagers, queer (lesbian), betrayal and bad decisions by teenagers, too sexy for teens (same series), rape and ultra-violence, incest+terrible parenting+fallout from, the impact of a life, and too sexy for the teens (different series).

@dsalo It might be useful to come at it from the perspective of "no privacy in public" means "your data will be hacked and leaked and sold to whomever wants it," but with a lovely illustrative example of tracking someone throughout their day using methods and such that don't require court orders, but should. And also possibly the band that used the surveillance video to make a music video. Or Afroman. Or frame it as stalkerware, but from people with even less morals than your stalker ex.

@WhidbeyWXGuy@mastodon.social Welcome! Regarding the storms that happened around your area this week, what makes lightning storms so rare in that area? I'm more used to Great Lakes weather, where enough rain often means lightning and thunder, but there's a lot less of it on the west side of the mountains.

I had one quibble, that the 74%-0.4% comparison (74% of girls are interested in STEM topics, 0.4% of women choose computer science as a degree) is a little apples to oranges, but if we changed the 0.4% number to include all women STEM undergraduate degrees, I feel we might move the percentage up...one, maybe two percentage points at the most optimistic and inclusive definition? xkcd 385 ( https://xkcd.com/385/ ) still applies here, and how.

I finished @aartiramkrishna@toot.io 's @SeaGL@mastodon.social talk, "The Leaky Pipeline" ( https://seagl.org/archive/2022/the-leaky-pipeline ) and think that it could serve as an example of how any minoritized group is dropped from the pipeline, even though many professions (like my own) desperately want to be seen as not contributing to the problem, even though they do things like mount structural barriers and create norms that discourage the participation of the few minoritized people who manage to persist.
