@carnage4life@mas.to I had hands on with Palantir in 2013. It was clear then what the product was intended to do (questionable that it could fully deliver because of difficulty bringing in all the data they wanted), and my clients were slavering over what they could do to their staff, their customers and their "targets". It was the ultimate tool for the ultimate secret police force. It built dossiers on everyone the org touched, then everyone in their circle, and the next circle, etc.

@shoq I'm looking at the parliamentary super majority which has the power to undo a lot of Orban's damage...if that's their goal. That is where change must happen. If the party wants to be a little center right, then it will be a return to normal democratic politics, like the German Christian Democrats. For now, it may be enough that they are anti-Putin/Trump.

@cricket_bacon *shrug* Sure, gerrymandering is gerrymandering. My point isn't the fact of gerrymandering, it is the way in which manipulation of voter pools can catastrophically backfire if turnout greatly exceeds the manipulation margin. If you get massive turnout *and* the district holds, well, then it's either a different type of manipulation (packing vs. cracking) or it is an accurate reflection of the wishes of the majority of voters.

It's not enough to vote the orange shitgibbon out of office. The GOP itself must be dismantled, root & branch. We can see the beginning of this in our recent primaries & special elections. We're winning districts that had gone double digits for Trump. Previously uncontestable GOP seats are getting shaky. GOP office holders are walking away from what should be no-lose contests. The margin of victory is in the turnout margins in the gerrymandered districts.

With high turnout, they got wiped out of the *parliamentary seats* which is going to allow TISZA to immediately reverse the bulk of Orban's constitutional & regulatory abuse. There was always a strong likelihood of Orban himself being defeated, but the real victory was ripping out his party's control of the parliament. We need to pay attention to this in the US & we need to repeat this success, state by state, district by district.

Something to note about the Hungarian election is that the Orban's FIDESZ party engaged in GOP style gerrymandering to try to skew election results in their favor in their voting districts. They ran into the problem of high turnout, which is the Achilles heel of gerrymandering. They gave themselves FIDESZ majority districts, but with margins that *only* work if turnout is light or ordinary.

@SarahKite@mastodon.social I'm very lucky that my work is mostly remote, with only a day or two in the office each month. I'm sure to mask there. I don't eat out much, but that's not a big change from pre-Covid. I'm vaxxed & boosted so if I am in a situation where I can't avoid an indoor location w/many people & no mask, I'm as protected as I can be.
