The Ranty Highwayman

@RantyHighwayman@mas.to
  • Open on mas.to

A freelance highway engineer's adventures in time & space. The street is not too narrow, your imagination is too narrow.

I'm interested in making urban places safe and easy for walking, wheeling and cycling.

I'm currently trying to make a living running my micro-consultancy, City Infinity, and I also write for Highways Magazine.

I also dabble a bit in home-brewing and fruit growing/ foraging, plus I am a bit of a Lego addict and a fan of silly action films.

I'm based in London, UK.

I completely forgot to post these snaps from the Severn Bridge earlier this week.

We were on our way to the Lad's graduation and of course, I made him take photos, and we went this way to Newport because why not.

In the summer edition of Highways Magazine, I get back to basics and look at getting vehicle crossings right. Too many highway authorities are not doing their job right here. This week's early starts have been me getting across London to look at school streets in Brent, and this morning, I caught this wonderful scene of people using a street in scheme I designed. As intended. ☺️

Waiting for a relative at a health centre and of course looked at the unused token cycle park.

Stands too close to each other, too close to the planting bed and rusting bolt-down hoops. I'd lock my bike to the "shelter".

In the June edition of #Highways, I think about getting serious about #VisionZero, why the UK government's road safety strategy falls short and what if we included more than safety in the discussion. Digital issue available here: https://www.highwaysmagazine.co.uk/latest-issues

And we're done. A couple of older bottles failed in the shed - sometimes stored beer does this if kept a long time (maybe a couple of years here 😬). Then the wort with a little bit of activity still going to ferment a bit in the bottle, a layer of spent yeast and a dozen tasty bottles.

The legacy of Eric Pickles out in Little Clacton, Essex.

He stopped councils enforcing yellow lines with CCTV and now councils are using red lines because that wasn't affected.

Trouble is, you can drop off/ pick up on double yellows, but not double red.

So he's made it more draconian. LOL.

Once cooled, I'll pitch some yeast in, put the lid on and leave a week before bottling and then it will be drinkable after a couple of weeks and best used in a few weeks while it has a fresh taste. Pre-hops, nettles were one form of a bittering and preservation agent. #Beer #HomeBrew

In my brew bucket, there was 500g of spray malt and 250g of brewing sugar (you can use 750g of granulated sugar) plus the juice of a lemon and two oranges, plus 25g of cream of tartar (acid regulator and sugar stabiliser). The water off the nettle boil was green!

It's been a few years, but today I thought I would make a batch of nettle #Beer from my very own stingy-bastard crop.

Picked a load of nettle tips and boiled them up for 30 minutes in 6 litres of water.

I have bussed here in the past, but a newish local bus service my end to get to C2C rail makes it a doddle.

I'm based in London, UK.

mas.to

In the April edition of #HighwaysMagazine, I ponder a move to "maintaining accessibility" as being a better approach to faults within walking and wheeling space rather than "making safe".

Harwich has opened another large section of retail park near the port.

Actively trying to kill off it's already fading town centre for a car-centric future.

The UK has a serious disease.

Oh and at Harwich, you have to cycle over the spiral car bridge over the railway which is fine if you have an engine. 😳

Well, we're back in the UK and we'll be heading to a well-known fast food outlet for breakfast before we catch the train back to London.

This of course means cycling in Harwich, although port to retail park at least has quite streets and shared use paths.

At Hoek van Holland port and cars started to come off the afternoon sailing from the UK 30 minutes ago. I reckon whoever is at the back of the queue has at least 15 minutes to wait before they get their biometrics checked.

Well done Brexiters.

And back in wonderful Rotterdam for an early lunch at the Markthall.

Kibbling as has become our last day tradition.

And a photo of a Herring Boy to troll #TheDoodle. She's not a fan.

A slight diversion on the way to Goes station to look at a roundabout within a roundabout.

The Breskens to Vlissingen Ferry was very comfy and had a quick interchange with the train on the north side to take us a few stops to Goes.

Thank goodness. Today was a 31 mile monster day with a 35km/h headwind.

Time to find a beer.

Hulst to Breskens in what has been a brutal headwind all day.

Ferry to Vlissingen now and then the train to Goes.

So, in a pub in Hulst having a couple of beers, the landlord (who might have been drinking some of his profits) insisted we tried this. Good Lord.

This was natty. Traffic shuttling under signals with a little uncontrolled side road with cycling unimpeded.

The Department for Transport in the UK would faint.
