The actual quote was, "How can we say with certainty that tinned food, car emissions, radio waves, food additives, mercury fillings or any other manmade influence isn’t causing an increase in gender dysphoria?" While I think that the statement is still not a good one and likely comes from the wrong motivations, it's a far cry from him claiming that tinned food causes gender dysphoria.

@millihertz I mean, excluding the most common ones is a bit of a self-fulfilling filter. :) I do read about other minicomputers semi-regularly online, but it's not like with early PCs where you could still depend on thousands of them having been out there. It's harder to preserve history about something that only existed in the dozens or less.

@kscearce I wish people were more nuanced about the use of the term "Data centers". Lots of data centers are good, useful things. Not all of them are built strictly to run AI. If people go full luddite and start blowing up datacenters, but they don't know the difference, instead of making ChatGPT marginally slower, they're going to kill their local hospital, food bank, and fire department.

@minmi@sfba.social Plus, the big problem is that we're on the verge of eliminating a huge number of jobs, and the promise that the people making that happen make is that it'll free everyone up to make pots all day. If we don't have something like UBI, instead it'll free everyone up tp, you know, become homeless en masse.

@oldladyplays I liked that in Providence (Ann Leckie), people picked their gender as a right of passage into adulthood, and were considered gender-neutral until that moment. It makes way more sense than assigning one at birth. And the only reason people need to know is so they can play up to stereotypes anyway. Do you buy them pink or blue? Do you buy them a barbie or a matchbox car? How about you buy them whatever the kid likes when they're old enough to have preferences, and a variety of things until then?

I think anyone who uses a podcast app that they like would apprecite that. I do wonder if maybe there are a lot of people who literally don't have an RSS feed, though, and publish directly to Spotify. While I would argue that that might technically make it not a podcast, it might still be a thing.

@spaceluciolle Oddly, my Mac Classic alarm clock is exactly like that. It also happens to look like a Mac Classic and sense temperature. The display emits no light at all unless you tap the top to turn the backlight on. All the product shot have the backlight turned on because it looks more like a Mac that way, but the default when you power it on is for it to be off. It's USB-C chargeable and lasts a really long time (at least a month) with the backlight off. I've had it since Christmas and only charged it once so far, and that was because I had the backlight on for a few days. It's not even particularly expensive. Also, you insert a replica System 7 disk to power it on (and eject it to power it off). @lmorchard@masto.hackers.town That's a wonderful setup! The printers are especially nice. :) I love seeing other people's retro setups. I don't have enough room for that many systems, so I have an Apple IIe and an Atari 130XE set up, a TI-99/4A stored away, and I gave away the Amiga 500 to someone who wanted one and was savvy enough to repair it. :) Everything else I just emulate. This is my current setup, which is just next to my regular computer in my den. The small microPC to the right of the Atari is a headless Linux box running the surl-server that's required to make the Apple II Mastodon Client work. (And the white device to the left of the Apple IIe is an automatic cat feeder.)

@lmorchard@masto.hackers.town Hmm. I like how you think, but I feel like AppleWorks on an Apple II would be one step too far for convenient use on a modern computer. Now, something like MicroGoldEd on the Amiga might be quite viable, since you can mount a host system's folder as a disk under FS-UAE, so you could actually use that to edit text files on the fly. For the AppleWorks version you'd have to move them back and forth to/from the Apple II emulator using ciderpress or, if you wanted to use actual hardware, you'd need to use ciderpress to manage a disk mounted to the Apple II over ADT. Doable, but lacking in spontenaiety. I wonder if there's any magic one could do with the command-line switches available to FS-UAE and a special startup sequence launched from within the Amiga side that would let you associated the whole thing as a default text editor from the host system, though, so that if you double-clicked a .txt file, it would just launch the emulator, Amiga OS, and the text editor with your file loaded.

@sugar@goblin.camp I would think that pulling the cover thing over the keys would work? If that piano doesn't have one, I'm sure a length of plastic or wood long enough to go over the keybed and with small risers on either side to keep it clear of the black keys could be made pretty easily and would work fine. Maybe put some stick-on felt on the bottom of the risers to prevent it from scratching the finish. (I know you're not the OP, I'm just musing out loud.)

@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io I think, though, that it's easy to overlook how... not difficult, but perhaps poorly documented and/or advertised many things of that sort are. For example, I'm very aware of automation, and fully understand that you could do what you just described with it, but I would have no idea where to even begin with actually implementing the relatively straightforward workflow that you described. This is not to say that AI is a good solution, but I think that some people assume that when people talk about AI they mean using AI techniques to solve the problem, where I think for most people who are into AI (and to be clear, I'm not), what they really mean is "being able to use natural language to implement a working solution, using whatever techniques make sense". Like, slap a natural language front-end on an automation tool and the same people would be equally happy.
