@kimlockhartga I think it may be more a case of being self-consciously cool tbh. One of the bar staff also corrected one of our party on her pronunciation of a drink's name. 🙄
Honestly I would have just left & gone to a decent beer bar if not for the rest of the group I was with. I don't think I'll be going back.

Went to a cocktail bar last night fully intending to order a cocktail.
Bartender: "We don't have a physical menu. You have to check us out on #Instagram to get the cocktail list."
I find them on Instagram only to discover that it's impossible to see their menu there when not logged in.
I. Don't. Have. An. Instagram. Account.
Me: "Yeah, I'll have a small beer, thanks." (at less than quarter of the price of a cocktail)
🙄 FFS businesses, stop getting captured by #Meta. It hurts your business.

@annaecook On an individual basis, I think it's mostly fear. Like a professional/corporate version of FOMO. And I don't think most of them are aware of it to the point that they could articulate it as such.
Also there are a smaller proportion of grifters. And some genuine morons. But mostly I think it's just fearful people.

@FediThing @raymaccarthy We've picked one up for €13 after El Gran Apagón (the blackout that knocked out power, internet, mobile signals) in Spain last April. It would have been useful to know what the hell was happening because everyone was guessing here & the rumours were running wild. At least with a cheap battery radio we can scan the FM/AM channels until we get some info, whereas the phones were useless.

@relistan @JamesBaker @lkanies Ah but moral panics have nothing to do with tackling the actual social problems associated with a cultural change & everything to do with pearl clutching & thinking of the children.
The people who propagate them are only worried about their impact on specific groups (usually children/young adults), not about their impact generally. E.g. comments from middle-aged professionals about how AI will harm people younger than them, while they are immune to the dangers.
