Queer, neurodivergent, disabled hurdy gurdy player and luthier. I play the hurdy gurdy and other folk instruments for human and land spirits, and live on a 36ft narrowboat. My music focuses on traditional Scandinavian folk tunes, with some medieval and renaissance music from France and England thrown in! I'm also experimenting with combining traditional instruments with loopers and drum machines.

I've got an interview on Monday for an HND in musical instrument making and repair! I'll be bringing along the hurdy gurdy I made last year and hopefully that seals the deal :D

More #hurdygurdy progress - linings and head/tail blocks are in - the whole structure has really stiffened up now. Next up is making and fitting the bracing.

The #hurdygurdy is out of the mould, and trimmed with a hatch!! And it weighs 197g (6.95oz)
I'm really pleased with it. Next step is glueing in the head block, tail block, linings and bracing!

Second attempt on the #hurdygurdy shell - used a proper composites vaccum film and sealant this time, and this layup is much thinner - no flax, just two layers of carbon plus a third reinforcement strip down the middle. It only took 140g of resin, including wastage in brushes and breather, so it should be really light!

#hurdygurdy update - the flax/carbon shell warped. Almost certainly because of unequal expansion/contraction rates of the different reinforcements.
So I'm trying again-very very basic this time, just two layers of carbon plus a third narrow layer down the centre spine.
This will result in a very lightweight but probably very bright sounding back... This gurdy might be quite loud 😅 but I want to start from a simple baseline so I have something to compare to when I add complexity (like a foam core) layer.

The #hurdygurdy is out of the vacuum bag, the peel ply and breather has been removed and I've put on a gloss coat!
It's very lumpy but it's the prototype - a proper negative mould will make the outside smooth and put the lumps on the inside - but a mould is a big investment and I need to test the acoustic properties and comfort of this shape first - hence the lumpy prototype made on the positive mould!
