@azonenberg@ioc.exchange @emily@fedi.uni.horse I had difficulty getting good Picoblade crimps even with the super-duper expensive first party tool the first half-dozen or more times I did it. Definitely a skill issue, but also definitely compounded by teeny tiny parts!

@0h00000000@ioc.exchange How are you finding I3C? We evaluated the STM32 peripheral, but found that it was pretty half-baked for use as a device (clearly intended to be used as a controller). Concerns about that specific implementation aside, though, I'm worried that all of the cool new features being optional (presumably due to vendor pressure) is going to make cross-implementer interop a nightmare. E.g., why is DAA optional‽ Dynamic addressing is the big draw!

@mwichary@mastodon.online The tooling for styling DMGs like this has never been great, and I increasingly see new applications not bothering with any styling at all (just shoving the .app and the /Applications symlink at you, and expecting you to know what to do with them). Such a shame, because done right, it adds a wonderful touch of character to the installation process! And can act as a reminder that installing software is something we used to look forward to, and not something we set our teeth and muscled through out of grim necessity.

@Purple@woof.tech Yeah, fair. I handle the ownership problem by forcing all access to the same UID/GID in my /etc/exports: /home/files 192.168.0.0/16(insecure,rw,no_subtree_check,all_squash,anonuid=1001,anongid=1001) But that doesn't do anything for permissions. nfsd doesn't have any umask configuration.

@lina Like, no, that sourcing doesn't mean that they included the data in the model without permission; the data might be fine! What it does mean is that it's impossible for anyone other than IBM to audit the training data. We have to take them at their word. And if we have to take them at their word anyway, then the disclosures are merely symbolic.

To their credit, they do publish training data disclosures (https://github.com/ibm-granite/granite-4.1-language-models/tree/main/disclosures) Only, the second dataset listed literally says its provenance is “Private non-publicly available datasets obtained from third-parties”. @iliana What kernel does the image use, upstream Debian linux-image-arm64? Last time I tried that (about eight months ago, on a RPi4), I was disappointed to find that SD card throughput was worse by a factor of ~two compared with the Raspbian kernel, and the USB host driver didn't allow uhubctl to toggle port power. I wish RPi Foundation would put more effort into upstreaming.

@KolokokoBird@social.chinwag.org What even are the options for boring, cost-effective Canadian shared hosting these days? Last time I looked (some time last year), I found a handful of options which were pretty expensive (well over CA$10/mo for their entry-level package), and another handful which purported to be Canadian but actually quietly operated out of US datacentres. I know there's OVH, but I've had technical issues with their billing system in the past that make me leery of recommending them as a set-it-and-forget-it option. (Specifically, I'm worried that the recurring billing will stop recurring, or set off fraud alarms, and intervention by a suitably technical person will be required to navigate the control panel to set things right again.)

@lina@vt.social For in-person CTF competitions, would it be possible to do like programming competitions (specifically thinking of ACM ICPC) and disallow Internet access entirely? That would at least limit GenAI use to local models, which I suspect will remain uncompetitive at this sort of task for a very long time (due to the nearly inherent context size limitations).

@kirb Not like the current implementation doesn't also have problems. I invite you to try doing Store updates on a brand-new, out-of-box copy of Windows 11 on a low-spec machine on poor Internet some time. It'll chug for minutes just trying to figure out what it wants to do, and once it does finally start updating, woe betide you should you decide you want to postpone any of the specific updates – the buttons click, but they do nothing. It's my third favourite example of modern Windows UX rot (after Calculator taking multiple seconds to open on a cold boot, and... whatever's going on with Notepad these days).

@kirb I still have the Windows 8 “it's only for ‘modern’” apps limitation stuck in my head, and I don't know how to fix that (except that I also don't really care because I nuked my last Windows partition back in autumn, RIP in pieces). I imagine there are lots of other folks in the same boat. I will also never trust any Microsoft-run store with actual money ever again after they've shuttered at least two and taken people's purchases with them, but that's neither here nor there when it comes to cost-free software.
