Is it conceivable that printed books and encyclopaedias from before AI may become quite sought after and valuable as reliable sources of information in the near future?

Lesson learnt — turning a research paper into a talk is easy, but the reverse, turning a talk into a research paper, is much harder and almost impossible!

This is a persuasive and insightful analysis of the disaster that is British politics at the moment. Thanks @Tupp_ed@mastodon.ie

This Europe day one has to admit that while far from perfect, looking at the rest of the world, the EU seems pretty good. Happy to be able to say "Civis Europaeus sum".

@ASAPbio Astonishing how many people still think that posting a preprint risks being “scooped”. In reality it’s just the opposite; preprints are time stamped, public and citable, whereas in the traditional route a malicious referee can scoop you.

RE: @asiny@mstdn.ca

Helium is an incredibly valuable resource that we manage very badly. Although the second most abundant element in the universe, on Earth it only occurs trapped in rocks as a result of alpha decay of radioactive elements. Once it enters the atmosphere it is so light that it diffuses out into space and is lost. We need to conserve it as much as possible.

An unintended but positive side effect of the rise of AI and LLMs is that it may accelerate the long overdue reform of research assessment. If the "journals" are flooded with slop academia will be forced to take DORA seriously.

Sad to hear of the death of the mathematician David Wilkins from TCD - he did interesting work on the history of mathematics and was a talented amateur musician.

I do wish the media would stop talking about the cost of energy when what they really mean is the cost of fossil fuel energy. Renewables are and remain cheap.

@hfalcke @LudoWaltman @stephenpinfield @cwts @RoRInstitute @ASAPbio It is certainly much higher in astrophysics and theoretical physics, but people working in material science for example do not have the same preprint culture - there are many different branches of physics with different traditions and norms.

@LudoWaltman @stephenpinfield @cwts @RoRInstitute @ASAPbio An under-appreciated factor in the early adoption of preprints by the physical and mathematical sciences was I believe the introduction of TeX for typesetting the mathematics in preprints. Once scientists realised that they could do their own typesetting the journals lost one of their main selling points. https://council.science/publications/normalization-preprints/ #Preprints #OpenScience
