I don't know if it prevents stealing because I think if someone is really motivated to do so, they can and will. But for the casual viewer, it claims ownership.
I use a couple of different apps for a signature. I try to make it as unobtrusive as possible....but I'm also not selling them the way you would. I don't do a Getty Images-type banner.

@LifeByStills@mastodon.art I'm about as amateur as one can get, but there are some images that I'm particularly proud of that I share publicly that I do watermark. I also recognize that anyone could remove the watermark if they were motivated to do so.
